Hi I just brought a 02 Gtp, 133k on it, runs beautifully... except 2 things. When the car is warm it idles just above 500 rpms, it's not a rough idle either, quite smooth. The 2nd problem is when the car is cold and I go out to warm it up, I start it up and it make a ticking /clunking noise like someones tapping on an empty pringles can with a screw driver, after it warms up it disappears, and it's random not clockwork like the rpms. Any advice will be helpful, I want to avoid all major cost due to this being my first big purchase and having a carnote.

The tapping noise sounds like the Supercharger coupler.

Do you know if the car was ever modified?

Not I don't know if it was modified at all, but the noise is coming from the firewall side/ transmission side.

Does it make the noise for a while or is it only a quick thing? Maybe try having someone start it for you and you have your hand on say...the ABS unit. See if that's what makes the noise.

On the idle, these gauges can be a touch off. At 500 or slightly above is that in gear or out of gear? it should run semi rough at 500, that's a bit slow.

It idles smoothly IN GEAR just above 500, when in park or N it's idles at 750. (it only drops thay low when in gear actually). And correction, the ticking sound-sounds like if you were to "put your finger just on the blades of your ceiling fan while on low, so as to only allow your finger nail to clip the blades" if you can imagine that.

It does the sound until it warms up, 5-10minutes then it's gone.

You may have an exhaust leak. Check your bolts on the crossover pipe that spans over the transmission.

Odd how you know what sticking your finger in a fan sounds like..lol, good way to describe it though.

No..one of the ... stuff happens over 10 years kinda things.

Do your headlights dim when the idle is low like that? If not..you aren't below 600 in reality. The gauge is likely a little off.

Yeh, nothing dims really, but could it be a dirty IAC valve?

I was in the same situation a few weeks ago, and would describe it the same as you did, even "the fingernail on a fan" thing. Check this valve to make sure it's not the source of the noise.

It's not that, it's alot slower, when the car warms up and the rpms drop as they are dropping the ticking noise gets slower and more faint until the rpms are around normal idle and it completely fades away.

Today I started my car up, it literally made the clicking noise for 2 seconds and stopped... the car warmed up nicely and I drove on, gonna get off from work and see if it happens again.

sounds like once something gets warm the sound is closed off. Like exhaust expanding the closing a leak.

    Just saying..lol

You know what's funny what a day ago I actually changed my oil to full synthetic and no it doesn't do the ticking sound.
