Took it to my mechanic today. He said the head gasket tubes are almost worn out,and need replacing.
I cant afford that for 2 weeks.
I only use the car locally, and it rarely smokes during driving.
How risky is it to drive it every so often, until i can get it all fixed?

id like to know what head gasket tube is as well?

do you mean the plastic coolant elbows? they cost 6 bucks, and a socket wrench.

    2000 pontiac grand prix.
All the mech said was the tubes were worn down, and needed replacing before the gasket blows, otherwise could be 42000,instead of $260
    Thanks for the replies .

What motor? 3.1 or 3.8? supercharged or na. Can you take a pic of what he was talking about? We have no clue what a head gasket tube is.

Call and ask him for the actual name of the part that he thinks is bad. Cause...there's no part called HG tube on our engines.

And the chances of a head gasket blowing on these 3800's.. well...you had a better chance at winning powerball yesterday.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

    Its a 3.8 litre engine.
The tubes or elbows were replaced yesterday for $260.
The mechanic had to remove a bunch of stuff to get to the gasket, labor etc..y`know.
    Thanks for the advice

$260 to replace what I think your calling a head tube is really a coolant elbow? Wow! Take a picture might help us more.

    420 or 4200?

It should be under $1000 for a LIM job.

Maybe close to that or slightly higher if replacing the UIM as well.

If I had to guess I would say he has an l36 and has had issues with the intake degrading around the egr stovepipe and had the "tube" repair kit installed along with a new pair of elbows.

    MAN YOU GUYS ARE GOOD!!
I,ll see what i can do,but i was pretty pleased with what he did.
The same mechanic removed the knocking sound that i heard, and that i thought was related to putting in a little too much coolant.
He discovered it was a ball bearing in the tire, and removed it for free before replacing the elbows.

you get a steal on that ball bearing removal.
These engines are easier then putting lego's together. If you get yourself a socket set, some ratchet wrenches, and this site, it could save you thousands over the life of the car.
