To really get the benefits of it you need a tune with any pulley drop.
You might be able to drive the car without hurting it, but you would want to be able to scan it regularly to make sure its not running too lean because lean leads to broken pistons.
Your car will tell you.
Throw the pulley on and see if it knocks. The stock tune should be fine with it.
But only if you have a way to scan. Be it a tuner or aeroforce scangauge...
i have like the middle grade actron scanner it can read engine codes and give data such as IAT temps and coolant and MAF voltage and ect. ? would that be able to tell because i being put up agains a mustang gt with shift kit and gears i lost to him last week by a car and i want to make sure i beat him i have a 3.5 pulley in the gove box and i was wondering if i could put in on and you know like race it! without hurting it
You'd have to be able to scan for Knock Retard, or KR. If it is knocking it will retard the timing and thusly make you run slower than before. Every car is different, some can handle a 3.5 on stock tune with headers and intake, some knock like crazy. If yours is knocking you don't want to use that pulley without a proper tune.
I ran my rockered 3.4 setup on a stock tune for a while before i got my zzp 1.0 pcm and the only difference is the zzp tune runs richer and has upped shift points and trans line pressures.
