I recently bought a 2000 Pontiac grand prix GTP supercharged and it wont start for anything. I know the mass air flow sensor is out on it.I turn the key to start it and it acts like it wants to start but doesn't then I tried putting g starting fluid in it and it almost turned over can someone please help me.

Start checking the main 3 items.... Fuel, air, and spark. Hook a fuel pressure gauge up and see if there's pressure. If so then move on to spark. If you're sure the MAF is dead then unplug it. The car should run in speed density mode. DO NOT drive it hard during this, it's only guessing at how much air is coming in without a MAF.

if you dont have access to a fuel guage then just turn the key to the on position (which is at the point right before you turn the key to start it) and with the door open while you're doing this see if you can hear the fuel pump priming. it'll be a loud buzzing type sound. if you dont hear this then you have a bad fuel pump. you could try replacing the relay for it but those rarely go out

I heard nothing from the fuel pump at all :/I put in gas and cleaner for it and turned it over same thing still.then I disconnected to maf sensor and tried to turn it on with starting fluid then it turned on but then died.

if you dont hear anything from the fuel pump then you need a new one.

Have you checked all the fueses (in the car and under the hood near the battery?). Could just be a blown fuse.

I wonder if this could have something to do with the fuel pump resistor.

Not necessarily. I went from a steel tank to a plastic tank and can no longer hear the fuel pump audibly unless I have the access panel off and am touching the fuel pump to feel the hum that comes off it.Originally Posted by bps02gtp
Fuel pump resistor will start the car and then die seconds later if it went bad.

I would start by diagnosing power to the fuel pump connector on top of the tank. It's easy to get to with the hatch. Once you know you have power, then it's a pump issue if the pump isn't running.

I have a plastic tank and can hear it loud and clear. I always let it prime before I start my car cuz it starts easier.

And so nobody makes the comment again to lead people astray, just because you can hear the pump, doesn't mean you have good fuel pressure.

I agree... fuel pump doesn't mean fuel pressure and fuel pressure doesn't mean fuel is being injected.
Right now we are assuming toward pump or wiring based on the "lack of fuel".
One of us may have had fuel pressure and gotten towed for a no start issue. =0) Fuel Inj Fuse!

Naw its no biggie I'm not taking anything personally. I agree with u guys. The only reason y I'm stuck on fuel pump is cuz he said he didn't hear it. I personally never encountered a car where I couldn't hear it so that's y I told him to check it.
