I am now wondering how big the additive particles are - to the end of "Would a good/efficient filter like Wix/FramXG would filter out the additives you're paying for - clogging the filter faster and leaving the engine with less protection/cleaning/etc. Anyone know? I know 5µm can basically pass through without harassment.
As far as filtration goes, Mobil-1 and K&N are on-par if not ever-so-slightly better than the Purolator Classic. But at $13-15, vs Purolator Classic's $4 price tag... hard to argue with, unless you'd prefer longer changes.
In order of filter performance:
Fram Xtended Guard XG - ~$8, WalMart has them, 10,000 miles on box
Purolator Classic - $4 - Advance Auto (etc) has them... I would totally use this for 4,000 mile changes if I needed them (60% less filter media than XG)... but three of them to get you 10,000 miles is $12, so totally too expensive unless it's necessary or you like oil changes.
Anymore, I wouldn't recommend anything of lower quality, though I guess the Prolator Pure-One could probably do 10,000 miles at $7 with the amount of filter media it has... I don't really know what distance any of them are recommended for except for the Fram XG.
