Re: Engine Trouble - Need Help
I'm not that familiar with 07 models.....
But can u pull the S/C belt off and run it to see if it's located in the S/C or not? That should help in diagnosing. I know u can run temporary without the S/C belt on 98-03 models, just not sure on 04+ (separate belt or is there one for the whole system).
Re: Engine Trouble - Need Help
Can do same thing for 04+
Re: Engine Trouble - Need Help
No idea, it sounds like something could be grinding, although I'm not certain that's what the noise is. I bought the car a few months ago, and the original owner told me "there is something wrong with the SC, but we haven't been able to find out what it is". The man I purchased from doesn't know much of anything about cars, so it went in one ear and out the other, but he may be right, I don't know. Maybe I should change the oil in it?
Re: Engine Trouble - Need Help
Sorry, didn't see the second page of replies. I can look into running without the SC, will just need to figure out how to remove the belt. Kinda limited on tools, and knowledge to be honest. But I'll see what I can do.
Re: Engine Trouble - Need Help
you can hear your sc in the vid, sounds smooth. i bet that check engine light tells a story tho. key to most repairs is the code 99% of the time.
Re: Engine Trouble - Need Help
Ok, I'll have the code scanned next time I'm out and post back the info.
Re: Engine Trouble - Need Help
Just had it scanned.
P0420 - catalyst system low efficiency (bank 1)
P0455 - evaporative emission (evap) system large leak detected
dude at autozone told me to buy this product which cleans the cat? Versus replacing. I wanted to get your ally's input before wasting money.

Good read.
Usually when I get a P0455 I go tighten up the gas cap on both my wife's Durango and my GTP. In Oregon though we can't fuel our own gas and sometimes the attendants are in a rush. Check your gas cap O ring though.
Re: Engine Trouble - Need Help
does the car feel weak when you get on it? clogged cat will make it feel slow and weak. and it could stop the rpms from going up too, if you ever seen Beverly hills cop. bananas in the tail pipe works to dis able a car. same as a clogged cat.
if you go out and drive it some what hard at night, pull over and look at the cat see if its glowing red. if so its shot.
if the cas cap is not the leak, its gonna be a large one, like a busted vac line, or your evap off the intake manifold. smoke test works best if you cant see any thing by looking at things.
Re: Engine Trouble - Need Help
Replacing the cat is very expensive right?
Re: Engine Trouble - Need Help
I'm really not sure if it feels weak or not. I purchased the car with these problems, so I don't really have a baseline to go on. From a stop if I step on it, it moves pretty quick I guess.

how hard is it to remove cat? Has anyone ever ran lacquer thinner through gas tank? Anyone cleaned their cat before? Not sure how big of a problem I have here, and need to ensure this car lasts me a few years at least
Re: Engine Trouble - Need Help
I'm curious to the answers here. I have never done or heard of either. Makes some sense just not sure how much a motor likes lacquer thinner.

Re: Engine Trouble - Need Help
The cat is part of the downpipe. Unbolts from the rear manifold and at the other end where the resonator is. Not overly hard to do.
I have never heard nor had the notion to run lacquer thinner through any internal combustion engine. My gut says no as I'm not so sure the rest of the fuel system would enjoy it (orings, plastic parts, etc). Then again I learn something new everyday, soo...
If the cat is bad I'd just get a 3" ZZP catted downpipe and call it a day. Some PB Blaster on the 4 bolts that hold everything together a few days leading up to removal and away you go.
Re: Engine Trouble - Need Help
Go to youtube and search for cleaning the cat. Lots of vid's, not my cup of tea, I'd replace the cat. A shop should be able to do it in 30-40 minutes or less.

The above referenced video (from Eric) references the initial video (from Scotty). I would be very hesitant to put the thinner in a fuel tank - however to each their own (I, too, would just replace the converter). Additionally, to be honest, I don't believe the "clicking" noise around 4k RPM is related to the converter. If it were the converter, there would be DTCs relating tot he O2 sensors in addition to other characteristics of a failing convert (e.g. loss of power in other parts of the (lower) power band with respect to throttle position)
I may have missed it however what were the results of revving the engine to around 4k in neutral? Any "clicking" sound?

Scotty mentioned it and I confirmed it. LOL

Re: Engine Trouble - Need Help
Thanks for all the info everybody. I would rather only put gasoline in my gas tank lol. What's the difference in the ZZP 3" and an OEM cat? I saw on another forum that if I go the zzp route, it'll throw a code. So I can just order that part and put it on myself pretty easily? Couple bolts?
Re: Engine Trouble - Need Help
Do I even need the converter? KY doesn't do emissions tests. Saw some people just talking about not even having a cat...I know nothing about this stuff...sorry.
Re: Engine Trouble - Need Help
you will need a real cat installed or you'll likely set the check engine light, you can try to trick th eo2 into working with a pair of o2 simulators
