Brand of fuel level sensor

Have to get a new fuel level sensor for my 03 3.1 GP. Rock auto has a few of them ranging from $20 for Dorman, Techsmart, and airtex, and up to $90 for the ACDelco/GM brand. Which one do I have to get? I'm sure they will all work the same, but I'd hate to spend $90 plus shipping for the ACdelco one if I don't have to.

Where is the fuel level sensor? I'm guessing on the fuel pump? Or is it the wire that runs to about the middle of the trunk toward the passenger side?

its on the pump canister in the gas tank, you need to remove the pump, then change the part, re install.

personally if i were in your shoes i would changed the whole pump the only reason for this is that when the pump goes out and it will you will have to do this job a second time. im trying to save you time and money in the long run

true. just a delco pump off ebay is like 40 bucks. its when you buy the whole canister with the pump the price goes up.

i do like to live by the motto, dont fix whats not broken tho. taking a fuel pump outs not a big deal on these cars. ill take back seat removal over tank drop any day.

My new fuel level sensor will be here tomorrow, so I'm going to install that and see how long it lasts. With only 56k miles, I'm hoping the pump lasts a little longer.

Installed a Dorman sensor two years ago. Glad I didn't waste money on a new fuel pump.

Just finished replacing the fuel level sensor. Fuel gauge doesn't read any different. Now let's back up a bit...I am basing my thought of a faulty level sensor, solely based on the mileage I drove for a week vs. the amount of fuel left the gauge showed. It looked like there was quite a bit of gas in the tank when I was replacing it tonight, but vertically looking down inside a tank isn't really the best way to tell how much gas there is. Any ideas up to this point?

Top up the tank and watch the mileage.

That's my plan next. But it's still showing between 3/4 and full, and I've got almost 300 miles on it since I last filled up, and multiple start ups within the past few weeks to run it for about 5 minutes at a time. It should be down by 1/4

OK so I have the fuel pump out of the tank (currently fiddling around with it) drained the fuel pump, connected the two connwctors to the fuel pump, turned the key on and was moving the float arm by hand, and it was registering on the gas gauge. But why isn't it working in the tank?

does it have a plastic air filled float? if so does it have gas inside it? it should be dry inside.

Not that I can tell. But if the float had fuel in it, it should still read less than 3/4 tank full if it's sinking

After messing around with it, I have a feeling it's an electrical problem. When I manually move the float arm, the gas gauge moves slowly. I set it so the tank reads empty. When I hook it all up with we everything in the tank and turn the key on, it rockets to between 3/4 and full. It doesn't move slowly like it should.

Going to be borrowing a volt meter to check things out electrically. Odd that it wants to peg between 3/4 and full all the time. There is a fix thread posted by onlywinged1 from 2014 I'm going to reference and rule some stuff out.
