Re: Engine swap / Trans swap 2001 gtp v. compatible years
Ever notice my sig is a Bonneville? Bonnie went faster than Doggie's Regal.
But...if you want to be upfront... yes they are less likely based on not being sports cars. However the Bonnie and PA are heavier and .... I can show you how easy a chain stretches

Look up
99+ Bonneville SSEi
99+ Park Avenue Ultra
Buick Regal GS
They all have the same HD transmission as the GTP. Only difference is on the Bonneville and PA...the dipstick tube is different. It's held in by a 10mm bolt.
I found this site pretty helpful in comparing different year transmissions. http://www.gmtuners.com/transmission/index.htm
Being that this is my first build I am a bit paranoid using a non gtp transmission as I don't know enough about the differences between other models.
I found another local place offering a gtp trans for $275 + tax. I will be going in this direction.
How far realistically should I tear into the engine I bought that has over 150k miles? I have taken the lim and valve covers off to inspect it. Everything looks ok as far as being in working order and no sign of metal shavings. Should I replace the head gaskets while I have it on a stand? Any other items I should look at before putting it into the car?
Re: Engine swap / Trans swap 2001 gtp v. compatible years
clean the piss out of it. then change all gaskets, but the heads. leave them on there.
rockauto sells a felpro lower conversion gasket kit, has the pan, rear cover, front cover, both crank seals, w/p gasket oil pick up and the oil filter housing gasket. for like 30 bucks.
re gasket the whole bottom end. and rockauto also sells the magnum lim gasket kit for like 40 bucks, comes with o rings and other gaskets.
then wire wheel all the rust off. clean it with brake cleaner and paint it up the color of your liking.
Re: Engine swap / Trans swap 2001 gtp v. compatible years
check your balancer for sign of a wear ring/ridge as well...me and scotty both have had to put sleeve's on ours

Unless it's yellow. Don't do that. :th_laugh-lol1:
Re: Engine swap / Trans swap 2001 gtp v. compatible years
i dare you to be different like i was with the yellow.....be a stand out. lol
Re: Engine swap / Trans swap 2001 gtp v. compatible years
what a groove looks like, if you see this, take a good look at the seal if its not damaged re use it. a new seal will leak with a repair sleeve.

sleeve on pis is after it was ran for a while, and still leaked, so you can see the new score line the seal was making.

this was a brand new seal. seems like it was dried out from sitting in a box for who knows how long. but its all busted up.

good news is, changing the seal int he cars not all that hard really.
Re: Engine swap / Trans swap 2001 gtp v. compatible years
Thanks for this info. I am definitely going to refer back to it once I get to that point.

I have been thinking about orange since everyone keeps telling me that it is a terrible color choice.
Re: Engine swap / Trans swap 2001 gtp v. compatible years
orange and black. i bet it pops. the way i think about it is if i had to open my hood and see red and black every time id take my life lol
everyone does red and black, not that it dont look good, its just old and played out to me.
Re: Engine swap / Trans swap 2001 gtp v. compatible years
i would paint it 1970 pontiac engine blue just to really fvck with people
Re: Engine swap / Trans swap 2001 gtp v. compatible years
Paint is over rated. Been there done that... over rated and time consuming. If you have nothing else you'd rather be doing... go paint an engine.
FWIW do the front and rear cover gaskets, not just crank and balancer seals. The rear is one of the most common leak point on these motors.
