Beleive its actually 34mm, but most people including myself, have gotten away with using 36mm.
^^^ some are 35 and you can get by with a 36. Trying it on a 34 may be pushing it.

I use a 36 MM on mine. It's loose but it works.
I've seen anywhere from a 32-36, depending on which axle you have.
It's a 2000 GT if that helps sort out the size. I've looked in the factory service manual but is does not address fastener sizes.
The axles are the original ones that came on the car. I've owned it since it was new.
When I replaced my cv axles, the old one was a 35 mm but the new axles were 34mm.
The axle nuts on my 98 GT, 01 GT and 02 GTP are all 34mm. FYI, if you go to Advance Auto, they have an axle socket set as a loaner tool that you can use for free. They basically charge you the $65 cost of the set then refund it when you bring it back. You can own a set for $35 (after 20% coupon ) from Harbor Freight, that's the set I have. They come in handy.
You should also have a 1/2" drive torque wrench, the spec on the axle nut is 118 ft lbs, overtightening the axle nut will cause premature bearing wear and failure. On sale for $22 at Harbor Freight.
Public Service Message: axle nuts are one-time-use, they use a special stretch-to-fit locking process. You should use new axle nuts if you remove them, but almost nobody does....
Did a set of fronts not too long ago on a 2004, 34 was too big and was sloppy on the nut. This is what I used.
