Give me some feedback here...just had Aamco rebuild the 4T65E in daughter #1's '01 GT along with new torque converter. Car has 175k on it, motor is strong, but the car is rusting apart around the drivetrain. The problem is she is in KY at school and we are back in NY now, so paying mechanics prices to keep this thing repaired is like a bottomless pit. I wanted to get rid of the GP and get her into something else before I put the trans in it, but alas the timing was not right....it lost 4th on the road on the way home for Christmas.

KBB says the car is worth about $2k, what's the going rate for a rebuilt trans?

ive seen prices from 1600 to 2400. used tranny seems like a better option for a car thats rotting to hell. id not invest the cars worth into it, unless you plan to keep it til it turns to dirt lol

I ran my 2000 see for a while after losing 4th gear. Seemed to work ok. Gas mileage just went down to 18 from 24. I drive 35,000 miles a year so the $1800 rebuild was a no brainier. You could just drive in 3rd. Not sure how long it would last that way. Mine went 3000k miles till I had it rebuilt and seemed like it would have from longer. Gas is cheap now.

No...I already had the trans rebuilt. I am thinking I could get more by pulling the trans and selling it than selling the whole car.

I agree. That car might sell for $1000 or less without a working tranny. I see rebuilt trannys sell for well over $1000 around here.

I don't think your going to get a lot for a rebuilt trans if 4th isn't working..... unless i'm not following....

trans is worth more in the car running, even with rust. its now used, most sell for 500 tops.

the car can run away for a long time before it will become structurally unsound.
the rear strut buckets can be fixed with pieces of 2 by 4 wedged into the area above the amounts.
I'm finally junking my rust bucket and there really is nothing left of it.
the trans is worth more with the engine as a running driving car you should be able to at least get 750 bucks for it the person buying it will probably wanted for the engine or trans or both as a swap setup.
