If it's a bad gasket and oil hitting the manifold.. someone please explain why W bodies are the only vehicles being recalled. 3800 is in tons of other body styles.

Whats more funny is that almost half of the cars they are recalling are either wrecked or in a junkyard already.

I don't think it's hard braking at all.

There's a difference in the exhaust shields...

i think it comes down to the owner not acting on the smell or sight of burning oil. if you smell oil burning, its time to look at things or pay the price later on, via you car burning up.

people really are dumb these days.

Isn't Mobil 1 flash point something like 7.8K F? Also - the first fix was a joke - just relocate the spark wire retainers so it doesn't drip on the exhaust header.

As a 1998 Grand Prix original owner with 260K miles - I think GM should just offer to buy the car back or give an allowance for a new car.. My GP is done, well at least till my 2017 Gen 2 volt is built (yes a few months at least away)...

Moving a spark plug wire holder. Actually one of the best holders out there! It had no way that I could see to cause a leak or fire.
Changing the valve cover gasket.. band aid!
Removing the exhaust heat shield... win

I'm not following you how removing the shield fixes it.. Wouldn't the oil spilling over just directly hit the header rather than the shield?

The shield holds the oil back on the header. Removing it gives the oil the ability to run and burn off much quicker.

    I think.

W body engines have a shield over the front exhaust that is maybe 1/4" or less from the manifold. This is based on the space available under the hood.
C/G/H body engine have a small shield next to the lower hose off the pump.

All these motors had the same plug wire holder, they all had the same gaskets and grommets. Yet GM only addresses a fire issue on the W body cars. And understandably.. if you look at junkyards long enough you see W body fires and not much fire wise on the others. This leads me to say.. what's different? I see only one difference up front that could make a fire difference.. a tight to the entire manifold that would trap oil and maybe pool it..versus allowing it to run/bake off.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.
