i think it makes the alt spin faster to generate more voltage at lower rpms.

The underdrive pulley is actuall a larger than stock pulley which reduces the alternator spinning by 14%. It's aluminum and frees up some parasitic loss by spinning the alternator slower. Link to ZZP below:
