we get this oil eater cleaner degreaser at work and i found that to work the best. i just spray everything with water, (using a spray bottle) spray the engine bay with the Oil Eater, wash it with the wheel wash mit, and then let it idle and reach opperating temp while i wash the rest of the car.

letting the engine dry itself seems to like half steam clean it, ive had great results and havent had any problems with not covering it up yet

Yeah you should be good as long as you don't blast anything.
