Thread: 97-03 chassis undercoating??

I did one side of rockers in por15. Took me an entire weekend. Mainly due to the prep work and the massive time it takes between coats (2+ hours). It was a pain in the arse. If you get it on your hands or anything it will not come off for aaaages...

Prep work I hear is number one so if youre going to do it, do it right the first time. The stuff is really expensive and its a long annoying process to do so you dont want to do it twice. I used their prep n' ready stuff, and followed directions to a T.

The annoying thing is too, once you start you cant really stop. Once the can is opened you cant really store the stuff so you have to really committ a lot of time to it.

Can't comment yet on how well it works. Im going to leave in on just the one side for now and compare how it lasts compared to stock.

One thing to mention as well... dont try to sand it first or get rid of rust. Apparently it bites best to surface rusted metal and abrasive material. Do get rid of the dirt and oils though. And make sure to top coat it!!!

yes prep is KEY I here!!! I've talked to a lot of people at Car Craft that use the stuff and they tell me that the prepping is really important.. but it cant handle UV rays. If I go ahead and undercoat with POR-15 in silver. I'm gonna drop the suspension, engine cradle, gas tank, brakes etc, etc.. soda blast under the car((even though its never seen a winter and very few rains)) prep the **** out of it and spray it and put back together..

The problem with those cars are two fold, and under coating will help to keep it new for a long time. This is my take on undercoating a car driven on the street. I own a resto shop and we do mostly Pontiac's. Port15 is way over hype. But its good and better then nothing. Lots of prep and it still may peel and fade. I do love their Port 15 putty and we use it all the time. It you want a rock hard coating that will last longer then you and me, use a truck bed liner type product. You can take it to someone and have it done or buy the do it yourself kits that you brush and roll on. You can tint the paint to match your color or do it in a color of your choice. You can also do just good old black undercoating, in a can or buy a gun and the product from a auto body supply house. (SEM is one of the best on the market 3m is another one) You can also top coat it in a color of your choice. If you use the second option black undercoating you will need to use a seam sealer for the best protection you can get. For some reason (likely cost) GM never did this and that is one of the biggest reasons these cars rot around all of the welds and seams and under the rockers at the pinch welds, Use a good brush on seam sealer like 3m.
