a few months ago I got a new rack and pinion for my 2001 grand prix, ever since I got about 3/4 of an inch freeplay in steering, went back to shop and mechanic said that's the way it was and there was no way to adjust it, anyone have a suggestion, just doesn't make sense to me that brand new parts should have such a problem...the freeplay is aggravateing to me, wife's car she said she is about got use to it, but not me

Try checking the steeering shaft joint that goes between the rack and the column, it is under a rubber boot.

NO adjusmentsto be made, just make sure the connetion to the shaft on the rack is tight, the bolt is in place and not loose, make shure the u-joint is not loose or broken, basically you need to check all the mechanicals going to the rack to make sure there are no problems there. If somthing is bad, then that is likely the problem, if not, then you have to start checking the rack. Take a look at the rack, does it look new? or is it all dirty and greasy? If it was a reman (new) rack installed, it should still be clean, or painted all black. If a used un-remanufactureed rack was installed, the problem might be the rack itself.
