I have a 2006 Grand Prix GT. Love the car. It has 85K miles and has never been to the dealer (excpet when I hit a pot hole and messed up the front end - but that is another story).

This weekend I replaces the rear brakes, rotors, and put in a set of monroe quick struts. 4 hours work and went perfect.

Now I want to do the front end. I downloaded the chilton manual and it says for my car I can replace the struts through the shock tower without having to remove the springs ot the strut assembly. I guess this was standard on the W bodies.

Does this make sense to anyone?

When I looked at the tower I don't think this is correct for the 2006 GP GT. In order to change the struts I THINK I have to remove the entire assembly and do the spring compression thing.

    Is that correct?

    Which one is it?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

I think I am going to go with the sensa tracks unless anyone says otherwise.

how the hell do you replace the strut without removing it from the car? how the hell do you replace the strut without taking the spring or upper mount off?

    short answer: you dont.

Get quick struts for the front. Unbolt the two bolts in the knuckle and pound them out. then take out the top three nuts. Remove strut and reverse for install.

Actually, yes you can. I guess I should have been more specific on my question.

Here is a link to the KYB site:

KYB MacPherson Strut Cartridge Replacement on GM W-Body Cars - from CoxImport.Com - CoxImport.Com - A CyberAuto Group Website

So the KYB site and the Chilton's manual are wrong?

Any idea where to get quick struts up front? I have found them for the rear, but the monroe site does not list them for the front.

As this was never answered, I'll do it cause I'm having to figure it out.

For 2004 and up neither Monroe or KYB offer the 'kit's for the front, only the rears. So, you can get most of the parts from either, get new coil springs from say MOOG.

But noooooo....quick and dirty juju for you (or me) on the fronts.

That's great to hear, but are you absolutely certain it's a complete assembly? I can't find any reference/picture showing it's the total ready to go assembly.

I even went to AC Delco's website and the description is just vague, and my only other options are to ask rockauto or a dealership. And the last time I asked a dealership if something was what I *thought* it was, they said it was...and it wasn't.

    dgjks6,

Did you ever figure this out? I have not been on this forum in about 2 years, but now have 90,000 on my GXP! it has been awesome. unfortunately, im certain my rear right strut is shot, and my fronts. i need at least 2 wheel bearings. I have no trouble doing it myself, but Ill be damned to pay $389 for complete Bilstein replacements. how did you end up fixing your fronts? I have heard Bilstein has the replacement option you described above, as well as Monroe. can you let me know what you ended up doing?

    Thank you in advance.
