Has anyone ever tried to replace the Rack and Pinion seals.

It appears that I have one leaking on the drivers side, but the rack is working fine. its 40 bucks for the seals or 250 for the rack, so I would like to get this fixed as cheap as possible.

    Thanks

I have never heard anyone replacing the seals on in the rack. Where did you find the seals to buy individually?

From my best guess, I would say you need to remove the rack to rebuild it. I can't see how you could take it all apart while in the car. So if you are going to go through the 3-4 hours of removing and reinstalling the rack, just put in another one.

The last rack I put in my car I got from Ed Morad (I would never buy an aftermarket rack from any parts store - only GM racks for me). I believe it was around $75. And that was almost a year ago and 30,000 miles. Still working great! I would suggest you get ahold of Ed and get a rack from him.

Yea, I think thats the route I am going to go. I found the seals on RockAuto.com

For the AC Delco seals it was 40 bucks, and thought that was pretty good, but if I have to go thru the trouble of changing out the rack, I think I will get one from Ed, and try and rebuild the one I pull for the next change (since I have 3 GP's still on the road).

    Thanks

    Amen.

Ya life time warranty on the part after market...cause your going to need it in a year or so when this one fails or starts leaking too. LOL But who pays you for your time and labor with the R&R?

OEM replacement for me as well if that time ever comes.

Hello; I'm looking to replace the rack and pinion unit on my 2002 G/P. It was just replaced 3-4 months ago by a school shop, for the cost of parts only. NAPA is warranteeing the parts, but the school no longer has the program. I was a G/M tech years ago, but have never done one of these. Any suggestions?? How long should it take?? Thanks, Dutch

about 1.3 hours if you're slow. 30-45 minutes if you're good, measure your tierod nut distances on each side.
