I have a 2003 GT that has developed a "whining" sound and a steering fluid leak. Initially, the leak was clear in color, but now it looks milky, tannish in color.
After reading the many excellent, previous steering threads, I was able to pinpoint the problem to a leaky, passenger-side, steering gear boot located on the end of the steering rack...I know this is bad.
Is it correct to assume the rack is bad because the fluid is now milky? I suspected it was a mixture of steering fluid and rack grease.
I haven't taken to the shop yet for an expert's diagnosis, but I'm guessing sure the rack needs to be replaced because fluid is filling up the boot/bellows.
If this is a correct assumption, my questions are:
- How do I determine whether I have Magna Steer (a.k.a. Variable Assist, code NV7) or Non-variable Assist (codeN40)? I looked at the RPO sticker on the inside of my trunk and don't see either code.
- I'm somewhat handy; can this be a one-man job? I've seen posts stating both one-man and two-man job.
- Can I avoid having to align if I count the number of turns on the tie rods when I remove and install with the same number of turns?
- Is it preferred to buy a reman (A1 Cardone is what most parts stores sell) or the guy I keep hearing referred to as "Ed"? $200 seems to be the going rate for a reman rack and $600 to $800 is what I was quoted on the phone to have it done locally.
I know these questions have all probably been answered/discussed elsewhere, but I'd really appreciate feedback or thoughts.
By the way this is my first post...I think this site is fantastic. I've used it to help me with several repairs already.
Thanks in advance.
