Torque Steer?

I just bought a 2001 GTP in pristine condition cosmetically and drive train wise. The shocks seem worn but the main issue is the severe torque steer it has when you get on it. I have read the forum extensively but I still would like some input. I commute 50 mi. round trip mostly curvy high speed corners 60-70 mph. I don’t plan to race. I have had good luck with GR2’s with other vehicles but most of the write ups say the ride is real harsh. Is this true with stock springs? Are the Monroe Matics as good as the factory? Any other mods to help torque steer?

gr2s are a great performance replacement for stock struts. dont get anything monroe.

i run gr2s and plan on buying another set fairly soon.

dont wanna sound like an idiot... but what does torque steer mean? ive been trying to figure this out for a while haha

when you stab the gas the car will jerk to one side because of the large hit of torque all at once. i believe our cars usually jerk to the left, into oncoming traffic.

I had some torque steer with my Maxima but nothing like this. it seems to strart to the right then left and if you don't let off the gas it gets almost uncontrollable. I realize the worn shocks add alot to the situation.

its physics man. The back and of rear wheel drive car cars kick out when you hit the gas as well

I had KYB GR2s a few years ago.... worst struts ever IMO. My damn 120,000 mile 2005 Chevy 3/4 ton Duramax work truck (at the time) rode better than it! Too harsh for me it made the car very unenjoyable for me. Got worse lowered.

I put Monroe Reflex Struts in both of my GP and never looked back. Rides great! I have about 3 years and a **** ton of miles on both cars. Best of all, the struts/mounts/springs (I bought the quick struts) all are covered under a lifetime warranty!

check your tire pressure... if its uneven you will get torque steer. Also worn tires can make it worse, especially if the tires arent even.

I installed KYB GR2 struts front & rear. This solved 90% of the problem. I think the ride is fine, of course I have stock springs. Next I plan to check out the lower control arm bushings and motor mounts. Maybe poly.

I have Monroe Quick Struts on both of my cars, one has 40,000 on a set, the other has about 60,000 miles. They Both ride better than my car did with KYB GR2s at 10,000 miles! The damn car rode like a Chicago freight train! Pretty bad when I could say my high mileage, worn out, 3/4 ton Diesel Work truck rode better than my car! LOL!

Thats my opinion. When my Monroes finally fail me, i'll pull them out, go to my neighborhood OReilly store and get me a new set for free.

I've had great luck with Monroes, i've personally have had them on 3 different vehicles and put several thousand miles on them without any issues. Thats my experiance...

I couldn't find LLT anywhere around here or on the net back in the day when I bought them, otherwise I probably would of tried another set. Oh well, i'm better off with what I got now anyway.

Torque steer on our cars isn't bad compared to most other powerful front wheel drive vehicles. Its caused by the slight twisting and rebound of the axle (like a torsion bar) which occurs under hard acceleration. Our cars have CV shafts which are very close in length. However a Civic, for example, has more than a foot of difference between the two. Drive a turbo one sometime - you can almost change lanes with the gas pedal. If you have access to a Tech 2 or similarly powerful scan tool, you can increase the amperage to your magnasteer, increasing steering effort. Thats about the most you can realistically do.

actually you can change the settings Standard, Less and More Firm. I have mine set to the firmest it can be....it doesnt help with TQ steer
