Thread: ABS Code A062 - Low Accumulator

Ok, first of all HELLO. To everyone... new to the forum, just bought a 1990 Grand Prix STE with 42,000mi! Mint! In and Our! Everything is perfect, car runs and drives great! Now on to the question.

Took the car to my mech. and had him run the codes. The ONLY code was a 062 - Low Accumulator Pressure. Now he told me that my regular brakes are fine, that its not the ABS causing the 'whine' noise and causing them to be super tight when I push them, he said thats how that Model was designed. Are grand prix brakes really that tight? and do they always make that 'whine' or is that my ABS kicking in? If I unplug the ABS I have no brakes at all.

Also I have the service manual and the ste supplement, but that tells me I need a tech 1 to fix the 'low accumulator'. does anyone else know how to fix it because I don't have a tech.

I hate to ping my own post but I do really need help... Do the 90 grand prix ste have some kind of electronic braking or is this really my ABS as I suspect.

Did you ever find out the answer to this question?I brought my '91 GT home to day and it's making the whine you speak about but the brakes work fine and I'm curious about it as well.There are no warning lights lit and the car runs fine,25,00mi,but the whine bugs me.

Did you ever get a reply to this old post? I just joined up and have the same issue w/my 90 STE. I have discovered in my research that this ABS system (Delco I/II) was only used for 2-3 model years before those system generations were changed i.e. dropped because of so many problems/complaints. The whole Master Cylinder/ ABS monstrocity was just too complicated and cumbersome to operate reliabily.

I know this is an old post, but I have a '91 GTP with the same problem. The powermaster III system uses the ABS pump to produce the power assist for the brakes. The assist is hydraulic rather than vacuum. My ABS pump runs for more than 40 seconds before shutting off when I start the car for the first time in the morning, and it takes a while for the red brake light to go out. With my foot on the brake (applying moderate pressure) the pump runs too frequently. It runs for about 6 or 8 seconds before shutting off for about 20 seconds. The cause of this problem is a bad accumulator, which is the canister on the master cylinder with a yellow caution message warning the technician about gas under high pressure, and has a hex head on the end of it. This system was used between 89 and 91. I am currently looking for an accumulator. GM parts direct has one for around $150. A little more pricey than I had planned on. I am also going to replace the pressure switch as well while I'm there. Hope this helps.

Did that help with your brake issue? I thought about taking the whole system out and changing it to some vaccume system.
