I'm OK with the original stock sound system in my 2001 GP SE, but the main front speakers are starting to rattle a bit, probably dried out and torn cones from the sound of them. Looking for a pair of reasonably priced drop in replacements. Once I pop the grilles off, will they go back on, or will I need new mounting clips?

You have to take the door panel off.
Behind the door handle are 2 little plastic buttons pop those out and there are 2 T25 or T30 torques screws, I don't remember the size off the top of my head, remove those then carefully pry the door panel away from the door, you will probably break a few of the clips, just buy a package of new ones, they are like $2 from the parts store.

As far as speakers, try a set of Alpines, I had a set in my 97 and they sounded pretty good.

Don't buy cheap ebay or walmart speakers. I went that route at first and was not pleased. Eventually I took those out and bought some kicker cs series to put in, they sound great. And when you go to put the torx screws back in during installation, be careful not to drop them back into the door. haha.

I made this mistake once, bought these speakers at one of those event sales where they sell cheep electronics, only paid $20 for the set, they sounded good for about a week then while jamming out to Sweet Child O Mine they started popping and sounding like asshole. Then I made the mistake of buying those Dual ones they sell at Wal-Mart, lasted just as long as the cheepos did. I ended up buying a nice set of Rockford Fosgates. And I always manage to drop the second one...

Im rocking the cheep Wal-Mart Pioneer 10" subs in my car. Pioneer actually makes some good stuff for the price you pay for it.

I forgot too add, make sure you use a component setup with a separate tweeter otherwise the vocals are at your feet and it sounds like poo. I made that mistake and ended up wiring in the stock tweeters along with my new door speakers.

Those little tweeters in the doors make a world of difference.
