HO alternator

Would like to know how hard it is to swap out the stock alternator with a HO one.

Do I need a different belt for that?

Ive done part of the big 3, the wiring, need the alternator and doing battery sooner or later.


Running two type r's at 2200 watt, and I have bose so the watts are going up.

01 GT with 54k on the odometer.

A properly built HO alternator will bolt right up, possibly with an adapter bracket, and will use the stock belt size. That is if it's not just an alternator with an under drive pulley. I have one from DC Power I got about 3 years ago, and it came with all the necessary hardware, took no longer than installing the stock alternator.

Be prepared to spend some money though, well built HO alternators that will last can be a bit pricey.

what company is a good one to get one that's built right? price is not a matter to me, I just want to get everything fixed before something goes wrong with the system in the car. Dc power?

Are you going to add a second battery or just upgrade your existing? Might want to hit up audio forums for recommendations.

Every now and then I come across one in the Junkyard on Police cruisers I keeps wonder if there would be a point in swapping since I do not have a lot of electronics my car

I ended up buying a 220 amp DB electrical for 280$. Im looking into if I need a new battery right away or not, its a interstate. I know I need a deep cell, been looking at optima, odessey ect.

got my factory bose amp, 2200 hifonics amp @ 1 ohm so pushing the straight 2200 watts. I could tell it started hard after I was bumping and turned the car off for a couple minutes, then took a couple seconds to start

Just because the amp says 2200 doesnt mean its pulling it, maybe at 14.4v, if your straining the system your under 12v. I can hit 11.6 all day long when I crank it. Probably running 4ga power wire aint ya

I run Optima batteries in all of my vehicles. The Pontiac has had an Optima almost as long as I have owned it, the factory battery died the first year I owned the car. If you get the Optima red battery, you can tap into the side connectors for amps and accessories and use the top connectors for the stock car electrical.

That amp isn't doing 2200 watts.. Don't waste your money on alternator, get an good extra battery and 1/0 OFC cable...

db electric, bad choice. Talking from experiance here, mine only lasted 1.5 years and almost left me stranded. Currently have a Ohio Gen alt for a different 3.8, works well drop down to 12.4 or so at full tilt on my old batteries.
