And I've doing some research and I'm either going with the Pioneer avhp4200 or the kenwood ddx470. those are my two favorite

The only adapters i can find are ones for iPhone 4. Do i have to get one that goes with the HU or can i get just any one?

Depends on your headunit.. The pioneer comes with one to use with the 3,3s,4s etc.

The kenwood on the other hand you may be able to use a simple aux cord but not exactly sure

I have a kenwood im my wifes truck and a pioneer in my car now and I had to make sure to by the proper cords. I tried with just a normall apple cord and you can get video but no Audio. The cords that you pick up spesific to your HU will have a usb connection and an aux (head phone jack) that makes your HU recieve everything your phone/pod is sending.
