Just a quick question while the wife isn't looking over my shoulder. I want to surprise her with a remote starter, and I'm looking for recommendations. My budget is $200, but hopefully to be under that, and I'd like to only have one fob.

Car is a 2004 GT, no other security systems or anything fancy. Range would be good with roughly 50 yards. She works on the 5th floor of a building that looks right over the parking lot.

    Thanks all.

For that you could get a Viper.

The roughly 100 ones have like 1000yard distance

Sorry, I don't know much. I just picked $200 based on Best Buy. But I don't have a clue whats good. Any models worth looking at? If I can get by with $100, I'd be a lot happier

This one is pretty good, I've had friends who use this.

Although out of stock there, has the best info about it.
I know you said one fob, but almost all kits come with 2. As a back up you know lol

Here is where you can get them

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listi...&condition=all

Quite a bit cheaper than $200

Sorry. To clairify I meant I want one unifide fob. Some kits were a separate fob for the starter. I want a system that will replace the factory GM fob.
Thanks for the link. I'll check it out later when the wife isn't around.

Go with a valet 561r. Great range great price and has activation input so you can use the factory remote. They are on ebay for like $50 shipped. And they are all made by dei. Don't be fooled to pay more for viper.

I have a viper 5901 and a valet 561. The viper is great because it has a mile range and has a screen that lets you know if your alarm is going off and you can see, on the screen, if the car is started. But I rarely drive my car and it quickly drains the battery if it's not a daily driver. I removed it and reinstalled my valet 561 because it doesn't drain the battery. But.....you need to be able to see or hear your car to know if it's actually started or not. It does not provide any security but it is cheap and reliable (have had it for 7 years without issue). Also, add an immobilizer bypass to your budget because you will need it.

03 GTP...Its got pulleys and stuff.

I took a look at the valet 561. It sounds like a good product, but it also sounds difficult to install. People mention needing parts not included to round out the install. I'm handy with a wrench, and I can follow instructions, but I've never messed with electrical. I've done new head units, and upgraded speakers, just nothing like this. Like the mention of the immobilizer. I'm guessing that is so someone can't just hop into the running car and drive off with it? I'm willing to learn, but I am a noob at this. Do you guys recommend finding a local installer?

I did look at the viper too. I love the range and the confirmation of the car running. I'm a tad worried about the battery draw. The car is our daily driver, but the draw is a worry.

If it's a daily driver, I wouldn't worry about the draw. Mine would sit for 3 weeks, I'd take it around town one day then park it for another few weeks. That caused a problem. The immobilizer is how you bypass your transponder. The transponder is what makes it impossible to start your car without the coded key. You can find ones that don't require an extra key, or you can use a universal bypass module like a 556U that will require a spare key. As far as difficulty goes, the 561 is relatively easy. The viper is far more involved due to the fact that it has an alarm. But for as cheap as the 561 is, you should be able to buy the bypass and have it installed for around your $200 budget.

Installation of a remote starter is a B!TCH. I would not recommend it for a novice. I would pay to have it installed.

Who does installs? I remember this being an audio shop deal.

I like the idea of a security system and the range on that viper, but it's pushing my budget too much. I see it on Amazon for $220, and Best buy for $500 installed. If I need someone to install it, that's some extra unknown dollar amount. I've never been afraid of installing anything else in my cars, but this looks intimidating.

I don't know if this matters, but I don't have a chip in my key like I had on my last car. I don't know that I have a coded key. The key looks pretty plain, but I do have the blinking light on my dash.

Typical installs around her cost $70-80 for a viper in my area. Why not just save up a bit more and wait? You went this long without one whats another month or so? It's not something that you can't put off like brakes or gas etc. My opinion is do it right or wait until you can afford to do it right...rather be happier with a Viper.

I also only found two 561's on ebay. Looks like it was discontinued.
Avital 4003 Add-On Remote Starter Valet 561T -Free Tech | eBay

Is there a specific immobilizer needed? I see a bunch on ebay that all claim to work on most vehicles.

I'm not anti Viper, and I don't want to be a cheapskate, but right around $200 is what I can do. I'm about to drop $200 to do the brakes all around, and I just had to replace the alt+battery at around $225. It's a bad time of the year to spend this much on the car, but my wife *really* hates the cold. If she could start the car from a window a few minutes before she leaves work, I know it would make her happy. $80 isn't so bad for install really. I just want to be sure I know what I'm getting into.

This is all good info, thanks guys. Keep it coming.

That avital 4003 is the same thing as the 561, avital is another DEI company. The only difference is that you use your existing fob, which is nice.
The resistor/chip in your key is under the rubber/plastic head on the key. It's not like the older keys that had a visible resistor in the shaft of the key.

Never mind. I've thought about it and I won't let geek squad touch the car.

I'll try to find a local audio place to ask about installs. The only two places I ever used around here seem to be gone.

Still looking at it, I do like one that has 1,500 feet or so. Sounds like a Viper model. Either way, can someone tell me if I need one immobilizer over another? Looks like those are around $40, with a $60 Avital 4003, plus an installer's fee, made this Viper at Best buy sound good. I changed my mind after thinking of the many horror stories of Geek Squad installers.

Thanks for the help guys (or Gals). I'm going to hold off for a bit. I've been reading up trying to figure out how to make it work for us, and I think I need to go over $200. Or at the very least, I need to do a lot more talking to the local shops that do installs. I can't really hide this much so I'll include the wife in on it too. That much money she needs to approve on it

I'm still open to suggestions that you all have, I just need something with good range. Ideally, a 2-way system so she knows it's running. I remembered that she can't leave her desk to go over to a window anymore.

    Thanks again.

Most car audio shops also install remote starters. I'd suggest going to them for the install and possibly the sale too. Around me I see remote start installed for $99 everywhere.

I got a kit on eBay a few years ago that uses the factory fob to start, you push the lock or unlock button 3 times to start it or something like that. I have yet to install it though so I couldn't tell you well it works.
