I have a stock mirror currently with nothing on it and i want to replace it with the one that has onstar/temp/compass/auto dimming. Now i dont want the onstar even though i think it doesnt even work on these cars. My car is a 2002 GT without a sunroof. is there a wiring diagram for the wires above the headliner. I think i can hook the power up to just any 12v supply, and then ive heard about some wires under the hood somewhere that you connect for the temp sensor or something. If I could get some help it would be greatly appreciated.

Yes the wiring diagrams exist for the mirrors and the car. Decide which mirror you want and we should be able to help you out.

    But yeah..you can do this.

Heck..I have a maxima/murano mirror in my regal because I wanted one with compass, autodim and homelink
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

It's from a grand prix between 97-03. The options it has: compass, temp, onstar and auto dimming. Don't have a pic of it right now. Hope that is enough info

Nope...that's why I asked you to give me more info.

I could give you a wiring diagram for your car and say "hope that's close enough". But we both know that w/o at least a picture of the connector for me to match up, I'm likely not going to have the right one.

All I'm saying is.. help me to help you.

    2002 Schematic.

Looks like 02 had onstar as a possible feature too. Does the connector look like this?

that does look like the plug. its 16 pin going into the mirror with 5 wires.
    Wire locations on connector
    green/black stripe #6
    brown #7
    black #8
    green #9
    yellow #13
Id upload the pics but it keeps failing.
So is there matching colour wires that I hook up to just above the headliner or do i have to search for them throughout the car?

Honestly, I'd ditch the OnStar mirror and just get a normal Gentex self dimming with compass mirror. 1st gen OnStars are useless now since they are analog, and all signals switched over to digital a few years back, so even IF you wanted to wire it AND pay for the service after buying all the necessary equipment for the OnStar receiver, it wouldn't work. 2nd, the OnStar feature makes the mirrors hideously bulky, and adds a ton of unnecessary wires, where as a self-dim w/compass mirror literally only requires 2 wires; a negative ground, and a positive source that comes on with the ignition.

well this one has temp as well. im not using onstar it just came with the mirror, but this mirror might not even have onstar to be honest. it only has 5 wires. 2 for temp, 1 for ground, 1 for power and 1 for back up lamp voltage.

For any of the mirrors without map lights, there is only one power wire. This same power wire supplies power to the self dimming, compass and temp features. Then there's a ground wire, the reverse feature wire, and if it has temp, another wire for the temp sensor plug in. Not sure what the 5th would be for.

And it's impossible not to tell if it's an OnStar. The OnStar buttons would be lined up beneath the mirror like so...

Otherwise, I presume you have a 7-pin harness on a mirror that looks like this?

Unless they did something different for the European/overseas market, the bottom mirror should NOT have a 16-pin harness. Should be a single row 7-pin. The only ones that got a 16-pin here in the US are the OnStar mirror because there are so many wires that need to go to them.

As for color matching them, that's a negative. The wire colors on the mirror harness will have nothing to do with any pre-existing wires in your car. You have to find out which is which on the pins in your mirror. I'll give you the general rule of thumb with all the Gentex mirrors I've dealt with in the US.

#3 Should be the back up/reverse feature. Need to go into Photoshop and fix that when I get the chance.

OK, I just thought of something. Looking back over this thread, I just thought about the fact that you said you got this mirror out of a Grand Prix. At first, I thought that's not possible. No w-body came with those mirrors. Then I remembered your location said London, and it occurred to me that OnStar isn't available in Europe (only the US, Canada and China). So I'm guessing Gentex must have done a version of the same mirror without OnStar for the overseas cars, thus why it still has a 16-pin harness like the OnStar mirrors, which I've never seen or heard of before.

Keeping this in mind, I dug around the net for wiring diagrams that fit the bill, and I THINK I came across the right one. Other than the 7 being gray, everything else matches the colors you mentioned for the pins dead on. Different color wires in different years, makes and models of cars is the norm with Gentex mirrors, so I wouldn't worry about the one color not being right. I'm still pretty positive this is the right diagram for your mirror.

Rare...I've actually seen the 16pin plug in the US on a few cars. I think they swapped over at some point due to keeping the wiring the same for all mirrors.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

Is there any wires that connect to the temp sensor that are in the vehicle. Somewhere behind the radio, in the headliner or something? And what colour would they be?

where do you get the temperature reading from.I tried connecting my to my a/c out temp sensor and it showed a lower temp that it actually was. both a/c and mirror tem was inaccurate.
