I got a 2001 GTP about a week ago and I'm enjoying it, but I want to hook up my MP3 player to the car without using the godawful FM Transmitter I have. Right now I'm thinking of getting an aftermarket headunit but there seems to be issues if I do it. I can lose steering wheel control functionality and I could lose the HUD on the car.

Is there any possible way to install an aftermarket unit that preserves the HUD and steering wheel controls? The car has the Bose system on it, but I'm not sure if it came standard on the car or not. FM Modulators would not give adequate audio quality, I tried it on my Concorde and as soon as I hit the Newark exits on the GSP the audio would crap out to some local Latin station.

You can get an interface to keep wheel controls, you will not lose hud in the 97-03s. You can use the cheaper wiring harness adapter, all you have to do is jump you remote turn on wire from the deck to the pink wire on the bose harness.

I went with a JVC KD-A815 (front and rear USB) and Axxess steering wheel module; I didn't have the Bose system.

    Here is the install.

Does your stereo still stay on after turning off the car until you open the door? I'm thinking of getting a headunit installed at some place and maybe they'll know what to do with it.
