Hey guys, I've grown tired of my stock speakers (base trim level, no monsoon or anything), stock head unit and having to fm transmit my ipod. Also, I think at least one of my rear speakers is done for but I figured I'd just replace them all anyways. So, on my list:

    1. New head unit
    2. New interior speakers
    3. Eventually (limited on cash right now) get a 12" sub with a custom box to nestle away nicely in the side of the trunk.

I've been shopping around for stuff but quite frankly, I don't know a thing about electronics or car audio. Here's what I was looking at for 6x9's for my rear (they are 6x9's in the back right?)

    Amazon.com: Pioneer TS-A6963R 6-Inch X 9-Inch, 270-Watt 3-Way Speakers: Car Electronics

What size speakers are in my doors? Are there only two of them (making a total of four interior speakers?)

Here's what I was looking at for a head unit, but any other suggestions for this (less than $300, please) are very welcome, as well as for speakers. It doesn't have to have DVD as well, it can be just cd/aux, but I definitely want something double din that can display red:

    Amazon.com: Pioneer AVH-P2300DVD 5.8" In-Dash Double-DIN DVD AV Receiver with iPod/iPhone Control: Electronics

So, can anyone help a total noob?

From the pioneer speakers I've HEARD they dont really have that good of bass but every speaker is different. Usually with speakers you get what you pay for. I really like my Infinity Kappa's. Really deep sounding bass (not flat) and good mids and highs. Polk Audio is a really good brand too but they are $$$
The head unit looks good though

The doors are actually 5.5s stock but 6.5s will fit

Rear deck tends to amplify the 120-180 Hz range, with the strongest emphasis around 150-160 Hz.

Keep that in mind when selecting a driver.

Purchasing according to name brand is stupid. Have somebody switch between speakers while you blindly listen. Then pick the one you like most. Audio is as complicated as you want to make it.

I'm not trying to buy based on name brand, I'm 100% blind in this. I would follow your advice except there aren't really any places where I live that I can go to and actually listen in person besides RadioShack, and obviously there's a lot smaller variety to choose from.

The term "loudspeaker" may refer to individual transducers (known as "drivers") or to complete speaker systems consisting of an enclosure including one or more drivers.
    Some "light" reading... :

Loudspeaker - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sound boards are not going to replicate that extra cabin gain around 150 Hz.

It wasn't directed at you. It was the guy telling you x-brand is this or that

If I were you try some Polk DB's or Pioneer TS-D1720C. Not so hard on the wallet and probably won't hear the difference. Install is key.

Like I said I was talking about the pioneer speakers that I had HEARD and I was also talking about my speakers and Polk Audio speakers which I've HEARD. I didn't even know what Infinity was before I bought mine so I wasn't telling him to buy based on brand, if I was I would probly say something stupid like go buy Bose because Bose is the best duh everyone knows that. (sarcasm. Bose sucks)

Well I think I'm gonna put in an amazon order for these tomorrow, and when I get my next check hopefully buy some for the doors and buy a new head unit (still very accepting of any suggestions in that department - see first post).

It's frustrating going step-by-step but It'll be that much more exciting each time excited to not have to listen to my lousy stock speakers with an static-filled fm transmitter!

Please post what you thought of installing 6x9's, I recently purchased some infinity 6.5's for my doors. Install was simple, also have a JVC headunit (gift) it changes colors to match interior, has bluetooth, and 2 usb ports and can control my ipod.
