Oh, and I forgot you will also need to run a remote line as well, to turn on the sub amp. Most amp kits will come with everything you need.
remote line will be spliced into another line that gets power when the car is on. When power flows through this line it will turn on the amp, but this will not power the amp much at all (just enough for it to start drawing power on it sown).
The remote line is the small line that turns on the amp when the key is turned on. The remote line should be connected to a switch 12v circuit. A lot of people here like to add a circuit to their fuse box (pretty much buy an "add-a-circuit" at Best Buy or where ever and add that to your radio fuse in your fuse box) But you could use your factory amp in the trunk, because it already has a remote line, and tap into that and you wont have to run that line through your car. You'll just need a multimeter to test for the switched 12v at the amp.
I know I will be bashed for this but other people have asked about it but you could connect a switch to turn the subs on and off. I would not necessarily recommend this to you because it doesn't sound like you know a ton on electrical wiring (no offense). And with the whole in line converter I would personally put it in right behind the head unit and run the rcas from the front of the car to the trunk. And as for the gauge of wire you need you need to first need to know how much watts the amp needs and then calculate out how big of a fuse to get for your wire. If you have any questions feel free to pm me.
If I have an amp that has speaker level inputs I don't need a converter do I? Can't you just splice in new wired before the rear speakers and plug them into the amp? Or is it better to have the converter?
What route is commonly used for running the amp power wire in a 2002 model?
Grommet in the passenger floorboard
I searched that area earlier today as it tends to be a common route in most vehicle makes but found only a large square grommet with bolts through the firewall and nuts I imagine to be somewhere under the ac box?
I had a similar harness grommet on my 02 s10 but instead on the drivers side and when attempting to route the wire through it I found it to be filled with a white sticky-tack sort of insulating goo.
I feared the same would be true for my gt. Is this not the case or are you speaking of a grommet I might have missed? I have been attempting to search for answers to this topic but have yet to find any threads describing the power wires path in any detail.
Edit ** Nvm, I wound up drilling a small hole on the small flat square area of the firewall near the factory grommet and installing a smaller grommet of my own.
