Thread: Cheap Addition to 04 Monsoon

Buddy of mine wants to sell his current used audio setup. $400, and he'll do the install for free. I just want to get an opinion on the gear (and/or price), if you might be so kind as to lend me a moment of your time to review them.

The car it will go in is an '04 GP with the Monsoon system.

Memphis Class D MClass 16-MC1.1100
Pioneer TS-W3001D2|D4 12" Sub with 1 cubic ft custom box
Stinger SPC021 Capacitor - I've done some reading, which seems to indicate that this is pointless? I can save $50 if I don't buy this (so $350 total for amp and sub in box)

EDIT: Nevermind on those Pioneer speakers - I'll just find something cheap and easy online.

The goal here is cheap and clean. Thoughts, opinions? THANKS!

The current Pioneer Sub like that one (TS-W3002D2) goes for $150 plus shipping.
SonicElectronix.com I've got a baby Pioneer 10" in my TA with a 400watt Alpine Mono-D and it works great, no complaints.

The Memphis amp seems to be going for around $480 on line. Don't know anything about them but the specs look good.

I assume the Pioneer is a dual 2ohm, so you would be running in parallel for a 1 ohm load at the amp. That amp is rated at 1000watts @ 1ohm. Should wake up the neighbors pretty well. The cap might help keep your lights from dimming on bass hits a bit.

The weak link is going to be the head unit.

You are going to have trouble with the 6x9's because the Monsoon rear speakers are bi-amped. If you are crafty you can probably rig it up by cutting the tweeter leads and wiring them separately. Just make sure the cap is still in the circut. I'd also suggest putting caps on the 6x9 woofers to keep them from bottoming out.

If you can listen to it before you buy it, and your buddy knows what he is doing looks like an OK deal.

Well considering the rest of your speakers won't be able to keep up with the sub because you'll probably max out the settings on your amp...do you give a damn about the quality of your speakers? It's really a subjective question. There seems to be a lot of people ok with running everything through a string and coke cans so long as the subs give people headaches.

If you want a good install...it's going to take more than just a sub. Good clean bass requires decent mids. There's a lot of reasons for that but I won't get into a lesson here. If you want the most out of your sub that requires matching it with the mids in your current install. Mid range contour effects the bass line A LOT!!!

So instead of doing all the research or asking us to why not find a way to "test" the setup in your vehicle before doing a permanent install?

His truck won't sound the same as your grand prix...it'll be entirely different

Gotcha...I wasn't sure if that was in my response to the suggestion of finding a way to quickly set it up in your vehicle. I think it's a decent deal and if you don't mind planning a system based on that amp in the future, or have no qualms with mismatching amps...take it and run. Subs are easy to sell/trade/whatever.
