So I have a problem with my radio. It is an aftermarket Sony radio which has worked well before in multiple vehicles. Recently it has been in my 99 Grand Prix for 5 years and worked fine for all of them until now. what happens is while i'm driving the radio will suddenly loose it's ability to tune a single station. What this means is that all of a sudden i will get static sound and it will just randomly tune in small fragments of any station available. What's more is that for the few seconds i might get a station IT WILL BE EVERY STATION i tune to for a brief few seconds before it's gone to static again. The thing is the 10 disc CD and tape deck (yeah behind the face plate) both work but the radio doesn't. What's more if i turn off the radio or switch to another audio source it allows me a few seconds of radio again before i loose it. this problem used to not be that bad in that i could get radio for 20-30 min before this would happen, now it's a matter of about 5-10 minutes. I want my GD RADIO! I have taken out the deck twice now reapplying the wires to make sure i don't have a short but can't find anything. I checked on Welcome to Grand Prix Net; your best source for Pontiac Grand Prix information. and found I'm not the only one with this problem but can't find a solution anywhere.

Sounds like some bad caps and regular hardware failure due to aging.

well your radio has lost its ability to stay locked on to a station, obviously. this could happen most likely by a bad capacitor (as stated above). but it is possible that a bad potentiometer or coil comming out of alignment can cause the radio to tune incorrectly, but since u say its tuning in correctly, then wondering off, there are some screwed up tank circuits or something in there. so definatley a hardware problem. its old, time for new technology!
