Hey everyone, I've done my first mod. I made a backlit faceplate for my aftermarket head unit.
I went to ace and had them cut me up a sheet of Plexiglas 9.5" x 4". Then i had at it with the dermal cutter and grinder, not too pretty.

Well after I found out it fit all good and then I cracked it by being impatient and forcing the HU’s mounting shield through the opening, I made another trip to ace! I got some paint, and 3 more sheets of Plexiglas.

When I got back home and tried my hand at engraving, I decided my hands are way too shaky for that. A trip to Wal-Mart fixed that problem.

I put the stickers on a piece that I was satisfied didn’t look like complete crap.

    I then proceeded to paint!!!

I waited 10-15 minutes between the 4 coats.

I then spent 30 minutes peeling off stickers.

I made sure shield still fit after paint.

I wired the LED’s to the remote wire on radio; I figured they were low enough amperage to do that lol.

    Day Pictures.

Night pictures look much better in person.

Well so far I’m pretty pleased but I think I may use some black paint and wet sand the back to disperse the light with the fogging affect. I may also make it two pieces of Plexiglas thick to fill the little bit of a gap and make it more sturdy. I may also add some sheet metal brackets for extra security.

Looks good man. Definitely a good idea as far as doing something custom.
Personally though, I would have had the Grand Prix GT all closer together to avoid the big gap in the middle. All and all though it looks pretty sharp. Grats on le first custom mod! feeling the addiction yet? or need a day to let it sink in.

Nicely done for the first mod!
i remember my first.. oh the memories lol...

One suggestion tho, get some white plastic film stuff.. or soemthing similar and cover the back of the lettering, this way you cant see thru the clear parts in the day but at night it still glows blue..

also your a bastard i want a trunk computer lol

I'll build you a trunk computer for 500 installed. As for the plastic film i was hoping that the wet sanding would fix that, we'll see tomarrow. Any opinion on the color, black or keep it green?

honestly not a fan of the green.. grey or black will work. maybe even silver...
scuffing it up good would work too, sand 220, then 400, then 800, should make it nice and "frosty"

as for the pc, i know how to build computers, im just envious you are doing it first lol.. are you going micro ATX? or standard? how about specs etc.. and power tie in too??? bassically i wanna know it all

lol, well i'm trying to decide weather to do daul core athlon with 65watt power loose vs. the estamated 90 watt loose i'm fasing with this single core Athlon x2. They both would be standard ATX motherboards and CPU's but no additionall cards installed to save on power. the hdd and the cdrom(both from a laptop of mine with fried mobo) will be powered by a 3amp 5volt regulator. the computer is a compaq presanio 6000 if u want all the specs, just a computer i got for free from someone after they upgraded. I have an Hp motherboard with a socket Am2 laying around from an awsome ebay steal, it just needs a cpu and ram.

sounds reasonable.. i think the only way i would install a pc in the car is my creating a stand type device for my EeePC...
i get all the music i need from my iPhone dock installed in the dash

Yeah i get that all the time, "why don't you get an Ipod". well because ipods arn't original, granted a computer in your car isn't original but not everyone does it either.

true enough, being an iphone its always on me, and having a convient dock allows me to grab it to answer a call without fumbling with my pockets.. plus it is my main music player so another added bonus lol.. the pc is just for fun admit it lol you should really do it up tho, make a nice built in box with plexy, wood and led's make it look like something sweet..

psh, god your saying everything i had planed, but the sub's will have to wait till prob. after x-mas for some cash lol, but i planed on buildinga box where from the trunk point of view you'd see the subs on either side with the amp in the middle, then from inside the car u'd see in the fold down seat area the pc's box and plexi lid.

i think for a first mod on a budget its decent, definatly not show quality, but now that he has the basics it can only get better from here... Personally i think thoes HUmounts are a giant waste of cash.

I'm definitely doing a trunk computer too.
I'm jealous that your doing it first though.

I've never owned an iPod... mind you I did have an iPhone, and an aux cord coming out the back of my deck for it. That was heaven. just not a computer. haha
