Rear Speakers Not working!!!

I have a 1997 Grand prix gt and out of no where the rear speakers quit working. The front speakers still work but seem weaker than before. The speakers were fine the night before, but the next day i came out got in my car and they no longer worked. Any idea what the issue could be?

What sound system do you have? Stock or aftermarket? If it's stock, which one? In particular, does your car have "Performance Enhanced Audio?" To find out check the build label on the inside of the trunkid for "UQ3".

I have an aftermaket system. I put two kenwood 6x9's in the back and my front door speakers are infiniti kappas. The trunk label you asked about did have a UQ3 code on it as well. My gt sound system in it's stock form had two front door speakers, tweeters, and 6x9's in the rear. I put the aftermarket speakers in about a year and a half ago, but have not had an issue at all until now. The stock system was not Bose either, i think they were just delco speakers.

r they hooked up to stock amp? and also hows ur connections ( should be fine but its the easiest fix to elimenate ).

honestly i am not real sure if i have a stock amp or not. I checked the trunk for one but did not come across it. This morning i went out to my car and took a closer listen to my front speakers and they have no bass coming from them. I think something might have blew inside the deck which is a Sony Xplode deck, or maybe if there is a stock amp it blew out. Does anyone think it may be wires gone bad? I find it wierd that the rear speakers do not work and the fronts have sound but no bass.

"UQ3" is "Performance Enhanced Audio" which means you do have a stock amplifier that is labelled in the Factory Service Manual as the :Low Frequency Audio Amplifier." This amplifier is located below the glovebox. To access it remove the glovebox door (five 7mm screws along the base of the door) and you'll see it on the bottom of the cavity, it's a gray plastic box with a blue connector on the driver's side of the box.

First check the 10 amp fuse that powers the amplifier which is located in the fuseblock under the hood by the battery.

nah man, your wires are probably fine. My factory amps don't do anything anymore, wont even let the sound travel, I'm in strong belief that this issue my lie within the factory amp. u can check the HU by taking a small house speaker and hooking it up to one of the rear speaker wires off the sony HU and seeing if it plays.

Do that and u can eleminate the possible issue with the HU.

i checked the fuse and it was ok. I will hooking the house speaker up as suggested to see if it is the head unit. I'm going to checkout the amp this weekend. Anyone know if there is anyway i can check the amp to see if it is fried? Thanks for all the help so far

Thats actually the suggested method to check if the amp is working.

Also, if you listen loud for long periods of time, perhaps smelling the speakers might help you diagnose this. Burnt smell means following.

This one is also possible.

you'll need a O-scope to check that amp, lmao highly doubt u have one its like 5g's for one.

You could also swap for another amp in the exact same setup to see if it works.

Simple and likely less expensive.

Sweet sounds like an idea to me

I don't want to sound stupid here, but if the factory amp is blown i can just go out and buy a regular amp and hook my stereo to that correct? I know i would have to put the new amp in the trunk cause it won't fit under the glove box.

Your best bet would actually be to go to a junkyard and rip the stereo out of a wrecked grand prix.

Make sure if you've got the bose speakers get the stereo out of a car with bose and vice versa.

If you don't have the bose speakers, you can put in an aftermarket deck if you'd like, otherwise, you'd need to do some rewiring from what I've heard.

I don't have the bose package in my car, i Have a Sony Xplod Deck, infinity front speakers, and kenwood 6x9's. I thought about doin the junkyard thing, but i'm afraid that the amp may blow again in fear that it may be one of those parts GM lacked on. After i get the chance to look at the amp this weekend i will see what i can do with it, hopefully not too much trouble though.

yes, a aftermarket amp will work.
