I am looking at replacing the Monsoon 6 disc in dash changer with an in dash Kenwood GPS unit. However, I noticed that the dash computer displays the day and date and receives input on when to change based on the Monsoon stereo's clock. If I replace with the Kenwood, will the display no longer show day / date?

Well... see the fix here would be if it doesn't just set the time back on the head unit?

I'm not sure I understand your fix.

The other day, when I was looking at the new Kenwood unit, I wanted to see if the Monsoon's clock had any affect on the computer's day/date display.

I set the clock for 11:59pm and the instant it changed to midnight, the computer's day/date display instantly changed dates. Thus, it appears to me that the stereo and the computer display are "communicating".

I guess what I want to find out is, is this a common output on an aftermarket stereo like the Kenwood, or will the computer's day/date display just no longer display the day/date any longer without input from the stereo?

Hmm, well is the computer in charge of the date/time or is it the actual head unit? Because when I would put aftermarket head units as a replacement I would just have to set the date and the time and it would be fine again.

I just recently installed an Alpine IDA-X100 in dash deck.

I was warned that by doing so and not adding a special wiring harness I would lose my chymes from the doors being open, key in ignigtion, etc.

Also, Apparently the airbags could be affected.

I don't belive "wiring harness" is the correct term, but for lack of a better one this harness cost $149.99 from bestbuy.

    They are available all over.

Theres more to be read elsewhere, just my 1.5cents.

Moved to a more correct area for this.

I am not sure exactly which features are fully lost when replacing a factory HU, in an 04+, but I would say the computer, PCM, would sync up with the HU to correct for the right date and time, the PCM will store the date and time until you disconnect power from the car, just like any other and it will reset to a default date and time set by the maker of the HU. Once you set the clock's date and time it should sync up.

As far as radio having control over the airbags? I don't see how it could or why they would hook such an important feature up through the factory HU when there is the possibility of people replacing their HU's. That would be a dangerous combination for sure. Mostly the things lost in any GP with Onstar built into the HU, you lose the chimes and the ability to have cellphone function work through your speakers of your car.

When I took out my 2003's factory HU with Onstar, I only lost the cellphone portion and several chimes I lost, that really had no major impact on my car. I dont know if the airbags thing is someone's scare tactic to make you wanna buy a $150 wiring harness to retain those "special" features or what.

Sorry I can't be much more help than that.

So, do you still have the calendar feature?

Well in the 03's there was not a calendar feature in that style of HU. I have not seen the calendar feature in the 04+ to correctly answer that question. I would have to leave that one for someone with an 04+ with an aftermarket HU to correctly answer that question for you.

I am sure someone will speak up on that feature for you though

It don't matter what harness you use. Your date and time is coming from the Stock HU through a Data cable. The only fix is putting the Stock HU back in

I was going to get the "harness" from a shop where I got my Grand Prix and the wife's Altima tinted. He was going to cut me a deal for $75. I found a cheaper solution Walmart had the "harness" for $38.50. It retained the chimes, and added a 12V switched wire and an extra remote turn on lead.
