So I was looking at getting some new audio **** for my 1998 GP SE: new deck, some 6.5's up front in the doors with the tweeters mounted on my door panel or something.. and instead of getting some 6x9s for the back i was thinking about putting a couple 8 inch subs in place.. im wondering if anyone has done this project and how much a ***** it was since the space for the rear speakers is a 6x9 oval.. and the subs are 8in round... then putting an amp under my seat.

well then all you would hear is bass, it would overpower your highs/mids. It wouldn't really sound clean unless somehow you added 2 rear speakers with the setup.

I personally would not go with a subs only rear setup. You want at least a 6x9 with either a two way setup or if you feel froggy enough, you can get the three way style 6x9's. You will lose all music balance if you stuck only bass type sub 6x9's or just straight subs in the trunk. You will notice a definite lack in sound quality if you go that route.

I have the Memphis MClass 6x9's that are two way with a crossover added in the trunk for each speaker, and the tweeters are tilted towards the rear window to allow for the highs to bounce off the glass. The newer model MClass speakers unfortuately did away with the tilt tweeter design so that kinda sucks. I have seen some 6x9 kits that has a two way setup and an option to add a satelite tweeter to postion on the back pillars.

So for the love of Little Baby Jesus............Don't do it

when i put my 12w7 in the installer suggested rear deck, and said he would leave the 6x9 holes, use for blow thru, and install some 6.5" components in the rear next to the 6x9 openings. didnt have the cash to do that, but it wouldve been sweet. dont just use rear subs. u can put a sub in between the stock rear speakers, giving you better sound imaging, so u dont just hear the subs only. u could do 1 10" or 1 or 2 8" subs, just depending on what u were feeling. it also looks way cool

I left my 4" speaker ports open, for this very reason in the rear deck. But in all honesty, I have not seen the value of it that others have spoke often about. Maybe when I get my new dual 10's sub box created it will be different.

I am currently a running a 12" RF Punch in a sealed Sub Zero box so I am not blowing out tons of airs from the box. And my next box will also be sealed one, so I am thinking leaving my 4" speaker ports unused is kind of a waste. I might have to find some nice mid range 4" speakers to drop in there or something.

I havent had any mids or highs in the rear of my vehicle in years. Got so used to it from MECA that i never install anything in rear deck anymore. As far as subs in the deck it depends what you are looking for. If your looking to wake your neighbors aint gonna happen that way. As for SQ that is the perfect setup if done correctly. size/shape/style of the sub all come into play here. The #1 car in SQ 05 season used 4 8's in the rear deck. sounded amazing obviously since he won world finals. pretty sure it was pioneer HU, Diamond components and believe it or not Bose 8's for the rear deck. Anyways this is just my .02. Have fun

thats the point. i dont have people in my backseat so i wouldnt need the sound back there and if i can put the subs in my rear mount instead of speakers i would save money, and trunk space.

I think what I probably will end up doing is getting the 6.5" w/ tweeters up front. 6x9's in the back, and either a couple tens in my trunk or a simple amplified sub under my seat.

I dont like so much bass that you can barely hear your music...

Also if i were to get the 4 speaker setup would a good deck be good enough to run them directly from my deck. Cause my one buddy is telling me I should buy 2 amps, one to run just my subs, the other to run just my speakers. Seems like a waste of power and money to me.

Well it depends on what you like to be honest. Me, I would put an amp on my front stage before I even thought about subs. Thats just my opinion though. I agree with your buddy. Headunits just aren't enough for a decent set of components.

Well if you are going to be putting subs in the rear deck I highly doubt it is going to be any cheaper than a trunk setup. It may sound simple but it will take a lot of work to make that set up sound any good. If you're worried about trunk space then just run one 10". Or just upgrade your speaker system with a 4 way amp and decent speakers. That will give you a huge amount of base over the stock system.

If you do the subs in the rear deck you would have to cut holes in the rear deck cover to allow for the subs excursions, can't really hide them under the rear deck. just something to think about.

yeah, i think i will probably just put like 2 8's or 2 10's in my drunk with a normal box.. and run with the 6x9's in rear, and 6.5" up front.. i would rather just spend a little more and have a complete system...

plus the trunks in these GP's are friggen huge.. the more i look at it, the less i think i will miss that trunk space.

well i have no rear 6x9 in mine also , it definately makes my 15w3 breathe very well and i put some screaming front imaging in mine and left the 4 inch speakers in the rear beside the 6x9 hooked up to deck power , its very LOUD and very clean , it seems like sq is a lost art anymore

I agree about SQ. Although the last show I went to there was more SQ cars than SPL so its back on the rise.
