Looking for an answer/advice on why my radio display went crazy and now displays all random lcd characters, changing every couple seconds. No more time or coherent display info. It's a 2001 stock 6-disc unit. It happened after I took the unit out and opened it up to retrieve CD's that were stuck inside. I did this once before without a problem and it worked fine for a couple years. Something jammed inside and discs wouldn't eject, load or play. So out she comes. While the unit was on my knee in the car, with top cover & front removed, I temporarily put the faceplate back on and plugged in to power to see what the mechanism was doing and try to get it to eject the CD's. The faceplate was plugged in and powered w/o the metal front piece there to provide ground to faceplate. Oops. Didn't do anything. Pulled off faceplate and put on the front metal piece, then plugged faceplate in again and powered up. This is when the display went berserk! I then noticed I forgot to put in the rubber insulator sheet that goes b/t the face plate (that plugs into main circuit board) and the front metal body of the radio. Would this have shorted something? Or maybe the faceplate being powered w/o a ground connection for a few seconds? After reassembling everything properly still the same. AM/FM and presets are fine just no display. All buttons seem to be functioning, as you can hear a change in the audio and/or see the display randomness change when pressing. The player is still messed up but I wasn't intending to replace the whole unit to fix that.

Just hoping someone has some electrical knowledge/experience with these units besides "it's shot" cuz I already know that. I'm just getting ready to sell and now this happens! Thanks for any help!

Usually cold solder joints. When the manufacturers started switching to ROHS they used solder with no lead content and this requires a slightly different soldering technique. When it's not soldered properly then the solder breaks and you end up with an intermittent connection (what most people would call a short, though that is totally incorrect and a pet peeve of mine). A lot of times you can take something apart and everything will be fine other times you damage physical connections and they will crack and need to be reflowed with solder. That is the most common cause. Your description of forgetting to add an insulator could be the cause or might be a coincidence.
