Hey guys, new to the forums. Just picked up a 98 GTP today. Noticed the alarm doesn't work but the keyless entry works from the key fob as well as opening the trunk. Is there a fuse or something for it? Complete noob to these cars.

Man that was quick. No the light on the top center of the dash isn't coming on after I lock the car with the fob.

Bust out the owner's manual and scope out the alarm pages. It has different optional settings.
All Grand Prix, all the time. 69 Model J, 99 GT & GTP coupes. All junk, haha.

Does your key say PK3 on it?

Looked on the back, has some numbers and model number but don't see PK3. Also, the dealer I got the car from only had the valet key for it. Didn't realize it at first and asked about it, said that was the only one they had.

If your key does not have the PK3 stamped on it then your car does not have the alarm function. Refer to the remote programming section of the owners manual. When you programmed your remote did you listen to the number of chimes? If you look at the chart in the owners manual it will tell you what functions your car has.

some how im betting 98's dont have an alarm. just keyless entry.

easiest way to find out is to call a dealer with your vin in hand. they can tell you for sure.

GM has first used transponder chip keys in 1997, but were slow to phase the technology in. Today, GM uses transponders on most of their models. Do not confuse transponder chip keys with the earlier VATS/PASS keys which contain a visible resistor pellet. Most GM original transponder chip keys have either a PK3, PK3+ or just a "+" stamped on them. GM also uses a technology called Pass Lock on some cars from 1996 to 2007. These cars do use electronics in conjunction with the ignition lock, but there are no electronics in the key. This is often a point of confusion.
Another common misunderstanding are immobilization technologies used on trucks. GM did not use transponders on any trucks until 2007.
If the car has a security light on the dash when you turn the key on, it's pretty likely that it has an alarm. My 97 GTP had factory alarm.

I have the security light on the upper dash. I'll have to confirm if I security on the actual dash when I turn the car on, pretty sure it was there.

As far as I know they all came with that little lite regardless of whether or not it had security, it just only lit up on cars that had security. My 01 gt didn't have security but it had the lite there.
