Have a 2007 supercharged Grand Prix. Changed oil yesterday at 153000 and the oil leak on the bottom end is not fixing itself. It gets the back half of the oil pan wet and the tranny pan wet. I wipe it up every 5000 miles and think about fixing but never do. Loses about a quart in 5000 miles.

Looks like a pain to change the pan gasket if that's what is leaking. How hard is it to do and is there a write up anywhere? I could not find one.

    Thanks

its a 07. al pan. it could be the rear cover on the back of the engine. best to clean it up with de greaser up on ramps, then hose it clean.

then after its dripped dry get some brake cleaner and a rag on a stick and wipe the whole block down best you can. brake cleaner takes all the shine off the block.

remove the inspection cover too. its like 4, 10 mm bolts, clean it and the pan area there.

now drive it for a day or two, then up on the ramps again to see if you can see a new trail of oil to follow. could even be the valve cover leaking.

I will have to swap cars with the daughter for a week to clean this up and do the inspection. What's the most likely culprit? Pan is aluminum. Back of pan and inspection plat seem the wettest.

Pssshhhh. This guys got one post, and he's talking about things he said before? Good job getting banned SD! Haha!

Seriously though, do you ever smell burning oil? If so, it's likely a VC.

Its the daughters car and you can get a wiff of burning oil when you open the hood. Valve cover sounds easier than oil pan but the 3800 has fooled me before. .

when the cars cold. take a paper towel folded up and wipe under the lip of the rear valve cover. if it comes back wet with oil, theres one leak at least.

1 quart in 5000 miles is about how much my engine uses without any leaks. 2008 115k miles in great condition. I would want to get the leak fixed too though. When I first got my car a "rear main seal" was replaced under warranty - could be the same thing?

Or just spray everything down with brake cleaner or degreaser and put in a dye. Get a uv light too.
