let us know the outcome. chipped pistons will give you 120 across the board. and show you good compression. thats when you have to do a leakdown test to make sure there is no piston damage

LOL. I'm actually putting some lowering springs on a friend's Focus. It may be late tonight or some time tomorrow before I get around to checking on my car.

Yes Sir I remember my chipped piston...good 'ol #3...even had rings wrapped around the crank

Sad day in hell for me I tell ya...funny part is I beat the crap out of my car and the one day I was going slow in the right lane...it popped REAL loud around 60...sounded like a metallic popping thought the rocker might have come off since I had just installed 1.84's...obviously not.

Good luck man, hope it all comes out well for ya in the end!!

Well, I finally got started tearing it down. I got the front head off and found a chipped piston on #1. I'm going to assume that #2 and #4 are somewhat similar. I'll get the rear head off and some pictures taken tomorrow. Looks like time for a complete overhaul...

So, should I go with pistons from Ed, or should I go with some Diamond ones? And, depending on how the cylinder walls of the rear bank look, I may have to have the block bored. I'll finish tearing it apart, then make some decisions as far as what direction I want to go. Any suggestions and ideas are welcome!

If you want to get non coated forged pistons let me know, I ran across a link that had them fairly inexpensively. Just send me a PM and I'll send it to ya once I find it again.

Earlier, the same night, I saw only 1-2 degrees at 6400. That's why I went to fill up with 93 octane instead of 91 (I was close to empty anyway). As we were leaving the gas station, my laptop randomly died, so I wasn't able to get a scan on the way back home (when this happened). I'll finish disassembling everything and then decide what to do as far as new pistons vs. new block goes. Since I'm getting financing help from my parents, most likely, it will be whichever route is the cheapest overall.

Scotty, I will be sending you a PM very soon!

1-2 degrees making how much boost? any of the valves not seated well or scuff marks anywhere? you get down to the timing chain yet..maybe it jumped? stock chain or double roller?

..sorry for all the questions. i want to know too.

That was with about 12psi of boost. The exhaust valve on #1 has some trash keeping it from being closed all the way at the moment, but everything else looks okay. My exhaust valves on the rear bank look a bit burned. I haven't gotten to the timing chain, but I'm going to guess it's not the problem. I had a friend over here last night who just happens to have done a lot of engine building in his younger years and he let me in on what's probably the issue. The crank is warped and one of my main caps probably came loose. He set #1 at TDC and hit it with my dead blow and it made a clank instead of a thud. That, and #1 has some horizontal play in it. It looks like I'm going to be putting in a new engine in the next couple of months...

Yea... I'll just have to wait until I get the block out of the car and torn apart to check and see.

That's good to hear, Bio. At least I have some hope that I may not have to put in a new block.
Justin, see what kind of money I may be looking at for one of those in case I do need one. That's close enough that I can have it picked up and up here all in the same day!
Now, I'm just waiting until I can clear out some extra room from my garage to move in a cherry picker and engine stand.
