I am getting relatively high temp readings lately on the dash gauge and I am thinking it is the thermostat...
Not to bad to change that and see what happens ... Question is what have you done as far as using thermostat
sealant around the edge of the upper cover that comes down over it, the hose housing ? Or have you just put the thermostat gasket on the thermostat and
that's it, no sealant .... Thanks....

when you buy a new t stat, get a new rubber ring for it, its sold separate, like 2 bucks. the old one could be beat up and shot. and a new gasket.
take the housing off, scrape off any old gasket from the lim and the housing, pull the old t stat out, you'll see how the rubber ring is installed. copy it. put the new one in, gasket and the housing.
i use no rtv on this at all.

I never use a real gasket, just the rubber seal ring on the theromstat itself.
Hasnt leaked on any of the three 3800's we have.

how does that work? it didnt seem all that tight.
my old one looked like snot someone put around it to seal it. i thought it was rtv till i got the new one.

Yea...is the housing gasket really necessary, if you have the rubber ring? I thought it was one or the other, but not both.

I use just the rubber ring.

I was getting some coolant seeping from thermostat housing because it is a metal to metal seal. I obviously kept the rubber seal around the thermostat, but I also cleaned all surfaces really well (prepped with alcohol) and used Permatex rtv on the metal mating surfaces. No leaks since then.

follow the upper rad hose to the engine, its in that bubble there, aka the t stat housing.
being i just saw this pic here ill steal it lol thats it with no housing on the lim, lower right of the pic.

I've never used a gasket or sealant around the tstat, just the rubber gasket, can't say it's ever leaked there on any car/setup.
