To do an engine/tranny swap.. can I just unbolt the transmission and unhook the axles and all that and pull both right out the top? Or does the transmission have to come out through the bottom?
or just drop the cradle out from under the car. lift the front of the car, engine tranny bolted to the frame still axles and struts brakes, rack too if you want.
or pull both out the top. theres a few how to's on the site here.
Alright. Well, for time's sake, I might just drop that engine onto my current transmission since I don't have any transmission issues yet. And then when my transmission does decide it wants to poop on me, then I'll swap those. Actually, after I get a new engine/transmission I'm going to start looking for a nicer body and then swap the engine into that. But that's down the road =P
I agree. And yeah, I was going to pay like $440 for pistons and rings. I'm glad I found that. Now... Just crossing my fingers hoping it's still available tomorrow when I call the guy. Then I have to find someone with the vehicle that can pick up the engine/transmission for me and get it home. My brother is using the truck right now.. Maybe he can find a ride to work tomorrow so I can use the truck. As long as everything ends up working out =)
Worst case scenario, get a truck from U-Haul for a bit. If that is a good motor then I wouldn't sleep on it too long.
I would take a breaker bar and socket w/ you and make sure that the motor spins over freely before plunking down the cash. Also would pull every single spark plug and see how they look and look for any damage to them. Since this was his "son's car", who knows what kind of abuse it saw. Could have been running regular in it and chipped a piston, had the LIM gaskets go and take a bearing, you know- the typical 3800 things. I had friends burned many times on motors that I could not hear run beforehand.
What size socket does it take to do that? And thats a good idea. I was kinda concerned about buying an engine not in a car because I couldn't see/hear how it ran. Also, I was thinking that if I can, I'll bring my laptop and endoscope and check out the pistons/cylinders to see how they are doing
From what I recall it's a 24MM bolt, or 15/16's. If you have a way to scope the tops of the cylinders that could save you a bunch of headaches.
Anyone selling a good motor won't mind you doing these tests before you buy. If the seller won't let you check it out then I would walk away.
see if you got a socket that fits your crank bolt, ( balancer bolt) take it with you. pop a valve cove off, see how clean or dirty the rockers are, pull the plugs see how they look. then make sure it spins free. check the oil, smell it. if it stinks like gas they didnt change it all that often.
Moradpartscompany.com as well. Don't bother rebuilding the bottom end or expect a 300 mile motor. Your in MI the land of Grand Prixs.. Open up your distance and travel if needed .
morads prices are out of control tho. like whats makes this worth a grand?

the only one they got on line right now too.
Well just throwing them out there Scottyboy! As in a last option lol. Not to mention the price is really not bad for a motor from a reputable place. Of course there's other cheaper options of your willing to look around but some guys don't have time for that.
