At advance they're both listed under serpentine belt, one says main drive, the other says supercharger.
Also, make sure they're looking it up under the supercharged 3.8L, so many people have an attitude that "they're all the same" and just hit the first option that comes up.

The guy that didn't understand what to look for needs a kick in the ass, didn't they even try to help you?

I hate that so much with customer service people... Sorry we don't have EXACTLY the words you said, bye.
I always ask questions to figure out what the person is really looking for, or what we might list it as.

You sir are the exception then. Good on you. I have run into this more and more as the older guys retire/quit and the younger crowd takes over at the counter. I always try and look it up on their website and get the exact part # I need before I walk into the store just in case I get "Joe Teenager" telling me they don't have it. Half the time I wish they would just let me use their PC and pull it up myself. Would probably be quicker, lol...

You have to train the new guys. I do this continually at the local Advance Auto and the guys are very good overall.

A local needed colder plugs and stopped in. He dealt with a new guy and the guy "couldn't" sell him the plugs. We went over together and it was explained by myself and one of the vet's there that if a customer comes in and asks for a part, you get them the part. As well if they say it's for a 3.8, you definately don't question it. He know realizes many other parts will work in altered applications.

Advance/autozone wouldn't sell me a radiator cap with the lighter pressure. I had to go to a napa to get it. That is very common now, if the computer doesn't say it will work they can't help you.

I always ask for things by part number now at any auto part store, each time I go by application, I come back home with the wrong part.

Make sure you open the box and check the part before you leave, I made this mistake twice, first time I bought an alternator that didn't have the hole threaded for the bolt, then I got a power steering pump that wasn't even for a GM.

I have a few ways I buy parts.

    1. Ask by part number
    2. Train the staff of your parts store
    3. Explain what and why you are doing something different.
    4. Pop the hood and make them drool.

I have heard from the parts guys that you should definately be opening parts. Seems more and more, people buy parts, then return the unopened box. Next person opens the box to find a dirty broken part that might not even be correct. Some guys are using the parts, dumping crap in the box and gluing it back together.

I've been very lucky with the guys at my local Advance. Very helpful with tips for any job I'm doing, and making sure I have everything I need on my first trip.

Are all the pulleys able to spin by hand? I just had to replace a idler pulley cause the bearing froze up.
