i recenty got a set of comp cams reusable rocker arm bolts. after looking at the oem ones there seems to be a biult in washer on them. the comp cam bolts do not. my question is do i need to put a washer on the comp bolts? or just leave them how they are. No. The valve is supposed to be closed for torquing them down though.

That's the proper way to do it, but on our motors with stock lifters, they have a much broader acceptable preload, so having the valves closed for each rocker isn't important for our motors. That's what a bunch of credible sources told me anyways..

If you got comp lifters or some other aftermarket, their preload tolerance is way tighter so its more important to move each cylinder to tdc on the compression stroke.

I didn't have any issues just swapping out the arms from left to right.

25lb-ft on each bolt, I used blue thread locker for peace of mind, and you're good.

I torqued them as close to TDC as possible, I did this by holding a feeler in the spark plug hole as I rotated the engine. Of course this is on an engine stand, might be pretty hard to do in a car.... But I don't think it's required on these engines.

The only reason you're supposed to keep the valves closed, is so you get a more accurate torque reading without having tension on teh spring. I rarely ever rotate the motor so each valve is closed.
