why does it need to run high octane gas if it has a low compression ratio? i'm not doubting you, i'm just curious. from what i found the CR is about 8.5. the CR on my sable is 10 and it runs 87

yeah, the supercharger increases heat and lower octane gas is more volitile and burns at a faster rate and can be set off easier by hot spots in the chamber. Higher octane fuel is more stable, burns slower and reduces those risks. They lower the compression on supercharged vehicles to combat this issue along with requiring premium fuel.

Right now, I cant think of any supercharged car (using a roots blower anyway) that has higher compression than 9.0:1. 8.5:1 is fairly standard.

This is why you get better fuel economy on a lower octane fuel than you do on higher. But you trade off the risk of knock in doing so and doing serious damage to your engine like chipped pistons. There are examples in the community of people tuning for 87 octane, but its not been don a whole lot and to the best of my knowledge its been in areas with cooler climates where their intake temps are generally lower to start with and have more room to work with before they get any knock.
