I understand that you guys have to deal with a lot of people on various forums asking about Open Cone vs CAI vs Fender well intake all the time, so I understand if you don't care for these kind of topics. I have read the sticky about CAI vs open air intake. I understand the direct horsepower differences are fairly negligible.

Anyway, I've been doing some research into what intake system is best for my application (99 GTP stock now, somewhere under but close to 300whp eventually is my goal) and though I believe I've read up on the issue quite a bit, I am still torn between 2 differing schools of thought when it comes to my supercharged system:

    1. Some people say that something as simple as a filter directly on the throttle body is best, because it gives you the least restriction and the supercharger has an easier time cramming more air in.

    2. Other people say that cooler air (fender well intake specifically) is better for a supercharged application because it reduces KR, which allows you to be more aggressive with a smaller pulley size. They claim that hot air from the engine bay will be more likely to trigger KR. Thoughts?

Performance aside, the open cone intake seems to make the most sense. Living in Michigan, I could see warm air from the engine bay actually helping to warm up my engine quicker in winter, which might improve my fuel economy. Just a thought, not really sure if that's actually true.

As far as exhaust goes, considering my horsepower goal, will headers be a good investment for me? I read somewhere that adding headers can reduce KR, which could be helpful...but how much of this is practical and how much is nitpicking? What exhaust work would you recommend? I was lucky, when I bought the car, it came with a stainless steel catback. I can't tell you who manufactured it though, it's been there since the car's original owner.

Oh, unrelated to air, but what is with this 180*/160* thermostat popularity? Not bashing this mod at all, but trying to understand the advantage to having your thermostat open 15 degrees sooner.

That's it for the moment you guys, thanks for bearing with me, I've tried to be intelligent about what questions I've asked.

Let me just start by stating the fact all your questions have been asked on those forum hundreds of times. But because it is 4am and I’m bored, I’ll bite. Disclaimer: My responses are just friendly advice to GTP131. I just say this because this thread could explode, and if it does I’m just going to watch. Or go the other way and be passed by, hence my response. Balls I’m tired.

    1) An intake with the least resistance (the shorter straighter the pipe the better) and a dry open cone air filter.
    2) Colder air is for sure better. However what air restriction are you willing to suffer to get it? That is the age old question, which is why the comparison of different types of intakes is difficult. IMHO if KR is low/zero go for a low restriction WAI. If you have KR go for CAI. The answer for serious HP would seem to be a double stack intercooler.

Your fuel economy concern, that shouldn’t change by any measureable or noticeable amount no matter what intake you opt for.

Your exhaust situation, from the cat back is both what gets replaced the most and is also the best part of an OEM exhaust system. In other words, a cat back doesn’t give any real performance gain or mod latitude. Headers are IHMO a must do foundation for other mods to be effective and reliable.

The thermostat, change it to lower than stock only if you have to for KR.

    Good luck.

Thank you for the information. I understand that the questions have been answered previously, my point was that there were different answers given for the same questions, because people had different opinions and experiences. I just wanted to see some justification behind a few conflicting theories.

I've thought about the cold air vs fenderwell vs this vs that a lot. And have done some testing on identical cars. Thing I found was sitting still, you heatsoak and get hotter temps to the intake, no matter what system you have. I watched a true fenderwell intake heat up the same as a stock airbox intake. Then took longer to cool back down. Thing here is.. what type of driving are you doing where your horsepower matters. Are you sitting still heatsoaked at lights? There's little that will help. If you are cruising down the road, your under hood temps won't be crazy and therefore whatever setup you have, they'll all be relatively cool. The slight differences we may see rolling down the highway at 50mph in an FWI was cone on a TB will be negligible for our desires/spplications.

On the exhaust. Around 300whp you'll want to get it opened up a little and free things up. However once you get around that power, you will have created a zero traction car and it'll be fun...but tough to hook up from a dig on the street.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

The cone shouldn't go right in the throttle body. The maf readings get skewed, it needs a small piece tubing in between.

I have on open cone in my engine bay on an elbow. I recently bought a bigger cone, 4" x 9", and it made a huge difference. The old cone was 4" x 6 ". My intake air temps have dropped a little.
