Hey Shawn. I don't want to think i dont agree with you. I do 100%. I would consider the way you speak of to be the ''right way'' in my book. It's just some people don't have the cash for the little stuff like that when in reality if they dont then they shouldnt be doing the work in the first place ya know? But sometimes we skimp on the little stuff like that to try to get our project done. When i bought my 1.9's I actually bought the 105's along with the spring and retainers. Just didnt have time to put them on untill i did my cam swap.
So we do not need to worry about upgrading the rockers and springs if we are only going to drop a pulley size correct? Like going from a 3.8 to a 3.5 on the Gen5 M90??
Correct, swaping pullley sizes won't affect the valvetrain. The only time where I would recomend changing the valve springs is when you do a cam swap or rocker arms.
TDC,
I understand what your saying, believe me I do. And i've been in the low budget situation in my life, trust me here. BUT from what i've learned from people on ClubGP and from what i've learned from people here locally and friends of mine with all sorts of cars and setups, you really should opt to do it right or don't do it at all because it may end up costing you more in the end. Sure some people get away half assing things and get by, we know that. But not everyone is so lucky, I know many people who have suffered failures and none of these problems would of happened if they spend a few extra bucks to do it right in the first place.
If I would of known what would of happened to me sooner or even before I originally bought my 1.9 rockers, I would of waited to install them until I had the cash to get the right parts to do it right. I think I paid $300 for the rockers back in the day, an extra $130 is really nothing when considering the motor is about a $1,000+ investment. Honestly I figure if you have $300 to by a mod, you should have a $130 laying around to by extra stuff needed. IMO no one should be messing with a car without have some sort of resource handy incase something screws up. You can't trust eventhing you install 100%. I've known of people who got cams grinded wrong or key ways not strong enough for example.
Do you see where i'm coming from? I haven't always had the money to do things, but dammit I never try to skimp on doing it right the first time either. Its too damn risky and not worth it IMO just to get something done.
My advice, do it right the first time, or don't do it at all. Nobody out there needs a "mod" bad enough to completely risk there driveline. Thats my opinion though.
And I agree 100% w/ what Reptile said... Don't EVER buy used valve springs. Buy new! They are cheap...
