    prolly because 4th gear is gone. Your gunna need a rebuild to fix it. Or just drive it with 3 gears till it dies.

    you have probably lost 4th gear. it is very common on 97-02 Grand Prixs because they do not have a hardened 4th gear input shaft.

    read.

    No 4th Gear

    Because you busted the transmission.

    Too many WOT pulls on the highway? That is the main cause for not having the hardened 4th shaft...'03's FTW.

    The most common issue, as mentioned in that link above is the hub shaft for fourth has small splines and 97-early 03 were not hardened shafts.

    It's relatively simple to swap this out if you drop the subframe, lower the drivetrain slightly and do it through the side cover. I'm not saying it's for everyone, but it can be done w/o a rebuild.
