For some reason I got the P1404 code the other day. I was sitting for a while in line at Taco Bell and I dont know if that had a thing to do with it.

I bought a new egr valve but havnt installed it and really dont want to since its such a waste.

I cleared the code and it hasnt come back yet but if it does whats the best way to clean it so I can take the new one back?

I also read that there were issues with cel light coming back on even when the egr was new.

is there a proper way to clean and then install it back on where it doesnt throw the code again?

I read something about removing the harness off the egr when re-installing and clearing the code and immediately turning off the key so that the computer doesnt set itself wrong.

all that I want to do is clean it and put the old one back on and save the money of the new one.

this is on my 98 Regal GS

u can take it off and spray carb cleaner in the valve and work a coat hanger in there to break up the carbon deposits. if the code comes back... just undo your battery for 30 minutes to clear the code out.

I'd delete it and live with the code...who has EGR anyways? Cleaner intake and better air for the engine...that crap doesn't get recycled. Just my thoughts...

I got a code scanner. I can clear the code anytime without unhooking the battery. I just want to clean it and reinstall it and not have code come back in error.

and take back the new egr valve I bought last night. better things to do with $150

I read that you can put a new one on and it will still throw the code because without properly setting the computer then it will get an incorrect read off the new part and throw the code again..incorrectly. apparently not all repair shops are aware of this.

that is why I asked if there was any special way to reinstall the old one.
