I know everyone is probably tired of hearing about stalling problems, but I haven't found any threads that has the same problem that I am having. I have a 97 GTP. After one of my coil packs went out, I replaced them with MSD Blaster Coil packs. A couple days later she stalled out on me while pulling off from a light. No sputtering or nothing like that. It was like the key was turned off. Fired right back up and no problems. Happened again about a week later and same thing. So I pulled the coil packs off and cleaned the Ignition control module. Ran fine for almost a month. Then when I left my house going down a side road, it shut of again. This time I wasn't in traffic, so I could look around a minute. The radio and shift indicator light ond the instrument cluster were the only things on. Cut the key off and it fired right back up. When I got back home, I turned the key back one notch of run and it shut down like it did when it died on me. Radioo and indicator light was the only thing on. Has anyone else had this problem and does it sound like the ignition switch going bad? That is what I am thinking, but want others take on it. Tired of buying parts that don't fix my problem and it's kinda scary when you pull out, your car shuts off and there's cars coming at you. Any halp you can give me will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I suppose it could be the ignition switch, my first suspicion however, would be the crankshaft position sensor. But your symptoms are a tad different. When the CPS goes out in some cases it will just outright shut off or stall and might be a little difficult to start back up. In some cases it will start right back up. In other cases, it will shut down or stall and take forever to start back up.

The reason for this is that the CPS provides two signals. The first is for RPM which also ties into the traction control which is why some will see their tachometer go to zero and the TCS light come on (indicating traction control is off). The second signal is for the ignition and tells the ICM (Ignition Control Module) when to fire. If the ignition control portion dies it can just shut off like you turned the key off and in some cases it will have to sit for a long time before it will restart, but not in all cases.

If the tachometer signal part dies, then it may or may not stall but it will probably turn off traction control and your tachometer will read 0.

With the symptoms you are having, I believe your CPS is on its way out for good. If it were the ignition switch I would think you would be having trouble with some accessories, like the radio not working, the DIC turning off or not having all the fan speeds on the blower.

    Hope this helps out some.

My first thought was the CPS as well.

But I don't think I could explain it as well as Scotty did.

Thanks for the info. The only thing that I lost was the low fan speed, but that's been gone for a while. Figured that was just that part of the fan speed switch gone. So if I replace the CPS and it still shut off, do you think ignition switch going bad? Or do I need to look into another area. I forgot to mention that the car sat for about 2 years. I got it back on the road and have been driving it for about a year. My Honda I used to own kinda did the same thing, except it would shut off while I was driving. Turned out to be the switch. That's why I asked. I'll start with the CPS and I guess go from there. IS it hard to replace?

Its not hard to replace as much as it is time consuming. I did a complete write up you can find in the How To section.
