The alternator is grounded through its case, from there to the engine through the mount. The engine is coupled to the tranny, and the tranny is grounded to the battery near-ish to the starter.
The key to getting a good ground is a clean and solidly mounted alternator. Most people don’t have any issues with that unless they paint stuff around the alternator.
However, if you have a doubt you can add a grounding wire from the rear alternator mounting bolt to the fender well ground. This will provide a much better and more direct ground if you’re having issues.
