Well, I was planning on waiting until after the long weekend, but I was bored and had some extra credits at Autozone. Swapped out the TR6s for 104s. Replaced the wires with the same lifetime warranty Autozone specials for free while I was at it.
I replaced the lazy O2 sensor last week with an NGK and noticed an increase in mileage. I have a trip this weekend, next weekend, the following weekend, and the one after that. I'll let you know if I get anything better than 22 MPG, which is what I got on the highway when I moved from Colorado to Alabama (sustaining 90 MPH the entire way and had 500 extra pounds, so I was expecting it to be a little low...)
Well, I dunno if this is related but the check engine light came on. Does the car save OBD2 codes for you to view for later? The check engine light turned off now but I can tell the car still isn't right.
I thought something was up when the car wouldn't pull up the driveway as easy as it usually would. Car also has a ticking noise, intake is making the car sound like its on a cold start. o_O
Maybe I was a bit misleading in Safely Modding thread and I thought I updated it...but here it goes.
Platinum plugs. Never.
AC Delco factory replacements (don't have a part number)...if your car is stock.
Now for other options...
Autolite 606's...stock-ish car...as in stock pulley with a few bolt-ons
Autolite 605's...perfect for that GenV guy with the 3.6" or if you just like running a smidge cooler of a plug in your car.
NGKTR55's...warmer than AL104's but a great plug for modded N/A cars and your typical 3.4" setup...but...
Autolite 104's are THE recommened plug for 3.4" setups. Tried and true...even work farther down to the 3.25" range when 103's aren't needed just yet...hence where the NGK TR6's come in...they are cooler than your AL104's but warmer than the AL103's...so they tuck nicely inbetween the two...and are perfect for your intercooled 3.25" setup or however your getting down to a 3.25" or 3.2" pulley area...once you get to a 3.0" though...then you'll need AL103's...nothing less.
TR6's are too cold for a 3.4" setup...and if you think by running a even colder plug then what you need will help combat knock further...your wrong. You want the hottest spark you can get away with...not the coldest.
grab your semi useless haynes manual and go to the inside of the back cover.
meh... my plugs have been coming out normal then. ....and I haven't had a haynes manual in 10 years. it's all on the internet or easy to figure out....
Or dont? You sound stock :\
If I had your mods SD...I'd be running AL605's.
just as an FYI, Autolite has a rebate going on as well. They usually do. The current one is from January to November 2010.
Ya...but they are mail-in rebates....laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame LOL
and for coppers, it's $0.50 each....
...but I bought some iridiums this year (different application), so I'll get $2/plug for those![]()
Also...try different plug gaps. Hell...the Cobalt I drive I ran the plug gap all the way out to .065" before it misfired LOL Factory plug gap is .034" or something like that. I'm running .060" all the time and the best part about a slow car is you can always tell what works and this helped a ton. I gap my plugs in the GP at .055" though...just food for thought.
